I prefer my watering holes to be places with no TVs and not a lot of people. These places do exist, you just have to know where to look. Finding a place to wet your whistle with cheap beer and a fun atmosphere is easy in Chicago. I'll show you my favorite places to get ya started...

Handlebar

2311 W North Ave, Chicago, IL 60647

Handlebar, named after well… the handlebars on a bike. Easy to walk to from the train, but much easier to bike to. You will find bikes parked in the front and back garden area of the restaurant.

At night this joint serves Maudit and Hoegarden beer on tap. During the day, brunch begins at 10am. That’s how hipsters like it, start brunch as late as possible to still call it brunch.

Ride your bike over and eat in the garden if it’s still warm. If you don’t have a bike, rent one. You’ll fit in.

Danny's

1951 W Dickens Ave, Chicago, IL 60614

There is no TV, no bad music, and no longer smoking at Danny’s. This is one of my top favorite bars in Chicago! Danny’s has a laid back, hipster atmosphere, and low lit. So you could be wearing a non hipster outfit and fit in.

Bring your best poetry for poetry readings here almost every night, followed with music by a hip DJ.

Gold Star Bar

1755 W Division St, Chicago, IL 60622

This dive bar sits directly across the street from my other favorite bar, Phyllis’. Gold Star is simple: has a bar, a pool table, and beer. Lots of cheap beer too! Bring your friends and make it a night at Gold Star.

Phyllis' Musical Inn

1800 W Division St, Chicago, IL 60622

Phyllis’ doesn’t look like much on the outside, but on the inside, it’s hoppin’ with bands, young folk, old folk, and cheap beer! You can get a PBR here for $2. Best of all, because its a dive bar, the crowd is always fun to observe!

Club Foot

1824 W Augusta Blvd, Chicago, IL 60622

Another one of my favorites, Club Foot has $2 bottled PBR! This place has a crazy collection of things on the walls and behind the bar. From old pez dispensers, to bottle caps and photos on the walls.

I thought I collected a lot of crap. Nope, they’ve mastered the art of crap on the walls.

Rainbow Club

The photo booth was the main reason I started coming to this bar. That’s not the only thing that makes this place rock. The feels like you are back in the 60’s 70’s. I honestly don’t think that was planned, however. They probably haven’t changed the place much since then.

The bartenders are a bit snobby, but they have every right to be. It’s a great bar! Just ask for your drink and don’t linger… you’ll do just fine.

Rainbow Club located off of Division St.

I’ve never been to any of those bars! I need to get on that.

You should also add the Empty Bottle! Devil in a Woodpile playes there on Tuesday’s I think. What better than to have a blue grass band wander the bar charming you with their washboard musical talent while you oh so calmly sip the tip of your pint! -Russman (DJ Desk Member)

I am not loyal to any one place that serves up coffee. I like to hop around from place to place until I have found the perfect cup of coffee, or at least until my heart gives out. I love to poke fun at people, places, and circumstance. You can be a Coffee Slut too. Let's chat over a cup...
