Eat and Drink Chicago Mafia-Style

-622172198

Bloody massacres aren't the only thing Chicago's mafia, AKA the Chicago Outfit, indulged in during the 1920's through the 1940's. Live jazz, booz, and pizza satisfied a slice of their determined souls. I've scouted out a few restaurants where these guys "did the deed" and drank until the wee hours of the morning. Let Chicago's history take you to some of the finest restaurants in town. Who knows, they might still be venturing to these places, sneaking through hidden secret passageways... at least the ghosts of those they killed.

Room 21

2110 S Wabash Ave, Chicago, IL 60616

A little creepy if ya ask me…

Before this restaurant was established, a hidden escape tunnel was found in this building, that led to a door named Room 21. This building once housed Al Capone’s biggest liquor warehouse and speakeasy. In 1930, Eliot Ness and Federal Agents, impounded two thousand pounds of alcohol, using a 10 ton truck to knock open the doors.

As you indulge in your steak, understand that you are sitting in the very Room 21, where Al Capone used to hang around in!

This Cocktail lounge will blow you out of your socks. I mean, this once mobster hangout could still have a few lurking around.

Gene & Georgetti's Restrnt

500 N Franklin St, Chicago, IL 60654

So, this is one of the best steak houses in Chitown, and I don’t even eat steak, ok. Opened in 1941 by a couple of Italian brothers, if that tells you anything. Celebrities such as Frank Sinatra and Lucile Ball used to venture in and have a steak.

Some may not say that Frank Sinatra was involved with the mafia, but ummm let’s just keep that on the down low shall we?

Chgo Pizza & Oven Grinder Co

2121 N Clark St, Chicago, IL 60614

Directly across the street of this joint was where the highlight of the Chicago Outfit took place, the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre of 1929. Al Capone’s guys watched the bloody scene from the 2nd floor of this building.

Now, it’s a pizza joint, where they call their pizza’s pizza pot pies. Haven’t had them yet, but I hear they’re delichhhhhhhhh! I wonder what they put in those pies…

It’s open once again! The restaurant closed after 107 years of service in 2007. Thank god! I love a pint of the Berghoff beer!

After writing this, I have become so intrigued by Chicago’s history. This book looks GREAT!

Green Mill

4802 N Broadway St, Chicago, IL 60640

This was Al Capone’s hang out and Machine Gun Jack McGurn’s lounge. Word on the street has it, that Capone used to sit in a lone booth towards the back and face the doors. If his back was facing the doors, well he had a high chance of getting SHOT!

Never fear though, if he needed an escape plan, a secret passageway was located behind the bar that would take him out into the streets. It’s still there to this day!

If you get a meal at the Green Mill, they only serve food in a glass. No plates necessary. I guess that’s how Al Capone used to eat?

The Al Capone Story

This is good…. this is real good.

Here’s an interesting fact I found out….

Mayor Daley, had the garage torn down where the St. Valentine’s Day massacre occurred, leaving only an empty lot. No plaque was left on the wall to mark this historical event. Apparently he doesn’t want to remember what happened.

Hmmmmm Daley, you involved somehow?

17 West At the Berghoff

17 W Adams St, Chicago, IL 60603

Ok, let me preface this with a bit of background info. The Berghoff plays a large role in the history of Chicago. I can’t exactly say that the Outfit ate here, but I’m gunna anyway…. “They ate here.”

I say that because there is no true information that I can find anywhere! HOWEVER, the word on the Chicago streets is “They ate here!” It’s been around since 1890 and has some of the best food in the city! (Don’t shoot me for sayin’ anything.)

The Frank Sinatra

The famous Frank Sinatra ventured to Chicago often to visit. No one knows his involvement with the mafia, but I’ll betcha he came here for more than just food. Gotta love this man!

I am not loyal to any one place that serves up coffee. I like to hop around from place to place until I have found the perfect cup of coffee, or at least until my heart gives out. I love to poke fun at people, places, and circumstance. You can be a Coffee Slut too. Let's chat over a cup...
