The Art of Living in Chicago

With our economy going down the toilet, this country is in need of creativity, DESPERATELY! Being in the know of art, dance, theater, and music in Chicago is essential. Check out some of these people using their art to make the world a more livable environment.
Street Art
Yes, Mayor Daley we love art and it belongs on our buildings, our sidewalks, and on your face!
Walk down any street in Chicago and you’re bound to come across some radical art. The streets are an art gallery to ponder and admire. I’ve seen political statements, collages, and cartoon figures that remind me that there is life on this planet.
So many street artists in Chicago. Some may call it illegal and some may call it distracting. It is neither of those things, but pure art.
Hey, I’m already inspired! Look out for some slutty art, coming to a street near you.
Feelin’ uninspired, uncreative? Check this talented design family out. These guys are not your traditional family. I know ’em. Linear they are not, boring they are not, but focused they are. Take a look at their work. Makes you think and want to be just as cool.
From web to t-shirts, these guys do it all, and they do it well.

Modern art! Sometimes a single dot in the middle of a blank canvas can be so beautiful. A motor home, created to appear crashed outside the museum can be too. It’s all about how you look at it. Life is that way too, beautiful. Ok, getting a little deep here.
The MCA also has performances in their theater every weekend by various artists both local and from abroad. Check ’em out.

Susan Messing
When I first saw Susan perform I laughed so hard that I ripped a 6 pack that night.
Susan currently teaches at The Annoyance Theatre and has her own sketch comedy show “Messing with a Friend”.
Catch her perform at the Annoyance Theatre. You will never look at your friends the same. Can be a good thing, right?
Want to laugh so hard that you can’t breathe? Not too far from the Lawrence Red Line. Hop over and prepare to hyperventilate.

Things you can do to support art and artists
- Support your local artists. Buy their artwork from street fairs, cafes, etc. Only if you like it, of course!
- Donate money to non profits. Go see shows at venues that house artists and support them.
- If you come upon some street art, examine it. What makes this interesting, beautiful, or strange?
- Go see shows!!!!
- Be open minded and let it change you.
- WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE! ‘Cause it’s good for your brain. Helps you be creative.
- Take your kids (or for some, your friends) to dance lessons.
- Convince your family that a Liberal Arts college is the only way you will go to school.
- Surround yourself with beautiful things. Whether it’s in your home or the clothes you wear, be creative and different from the guy/gal next door.
- Smoke. HAHA ok, it’s your decision. I’m just sayin’. Sometimes that helps people.
Be kind and paint the streets!
The Seldoms- Dance
Who said dance needs to stay bound to a stage? This athletic modern dance company kicks some serious butt! I know, I’ve had mine kicked dancing with them. Choreographer Carrie Hanson created a dance piece inside an empty swimming pool last year.
Giant Fix was an interpretation of form, rhythm, and the first incorporation using both the deep and the shallow end without the use of a springboard… and no lifeguard was privy to an hourly wage.
Get out of your comfort zone! See some creative dance. Go on, go see ’em!
Be careful next time you look through a woodpile, a banjo playin’ devil might sing for ya. This bluegrass, folk band blows away their Chicago fans, every Tuesday night at the Hideout. Their corky, bluegrass instruments play for the Bucktown neighborhood. Devil in a Woodpile reminds me of old bluegrass ringing in my little southern ears down in my hometown of Nashville, Tennessee.
Ya’ll ain’t seen nothin’ till you’ve heard these fellas and they ain’t shy when it comes to singin’ ’bout their moonshine and their lazy days.
Sorry, couldn’t help ’maself.
Check out their site. If I told you where it was, then it wouldn’t be a hideout now would it?
All the Modern Art you could ask for! I always ask for more art. MORE MORE MORE! Sure enough, a new installation is set up by a new artist.
While you are here checking out the beautiful sculptures and some Henry Matisse, grab a bite to eat at the garden restaurant. This classy restaurant overlooks the McKinlock Court and if it’s a beautiful day, you might even tap in to your own artistic talents. Just limit your street art to the streets… somewhere else. They will arrest you. I don’t speak from experience, but I am almost positive that this will happen.

I just saw a performance here by choreographer, Szewai Lee, where a folding chair was the main focus. Why a folding chair you ask? Well, to be quite honest I’m not really sure. I mean it was a modern dance piece. Sometimes they can mean whatever you want them to mean.
Links Hall is a small non profit performance venue providing space for Chicago artists, as well as those from around the world. I’m so glad there are spaces out there for artists! Even if they love chairs… a lot!

Beauty is in the head of the crazy.
“Do something everyday that scares you” they say, whoever they are. Mix it up a bit. Go crazy and attach a huge cup of coffee to the motorcycle you own. I would, but then again… I am a coffee addict.
