Budget Gifts For Any Time Of Year
Perennial paupers, dread not. All you need is a little creativity, and you’ll be way more popular than when you gave out those favor coupon books last year.
Turn Your Kitchen Into A Soap Factory
Not only will these handmade soaps fulfill everyone’s dreams of smelling like a rosemary bush, but they will be a bar-shaped representation of your time and thoughtfulness. Whenever your aunt’s fingers turn purple from the dye, or your cousin clogs her drain with the exfoliating oatmeal bits, they will tenderly think of how much effort you put into this creation.
Many art supply stores sell your basic soap blocks, molds, dyes and scents.

Try buying cool herbs from a specialty shop for soaps or even candles.

Last year I was really in touch with my inner Martha Stewart, and I wrote out little recipe cards, and included some of the non-perishable ingredients in a basket along with them. Like a recipe for a lemon cheesecake with some lemons and a zester arranged thoughtfully in some type of ribbon-tied vessel. Remember, nothing says “I love you” like a basket from the clearance aisle at World Market. So think twice before you pay $65 for 5 dried apricots and a macadamia nut from Marshall Fields. These homemade gift baskets had all the gourmet charm, without the cost.
Include just the right amount of bananas and pecans on the side.
If you’re hands-on in the kitchen, I also recommend making large batches of soup, then presenting it frozen in a ribbon-tied canister, along with a recipe card and a mini baguette. I also did this a couple of years ago, and either my family members are really nice, or they actually seemed to like it.
Buy melt and pour soap blocks at bulk grocers like Rainbow. Coconut, goat’s milk, olive oil and shea butter are excellent picks. Then just melt in a double boiler, mix with dyes and herbs (which you can also find at Rainbow), and pour into cans, tins, or whatever you can find to hold their shape. Even toilet paper rolls would work. NOTE: Great Rainbow coupons in the back of your Yellowpages.

Here’s some more information on recipes and supplies, if you are as freakishly excited about making soap as I am. They also sell candle-making supplies if you’re not that into hygiene.
Packaging
Once you make the soap, consider packaging with a cool set of washcloths from the dollar store, or wrapping in cool fancy papers. I just did this for Christmas, and each bar came out to about $3, wrapping and accessories included. I don’t know about you, but I’d take a few bars of soap over a $9 gift certificate to Outback Steakhouse any day.
Pick out some fancy papers and labels here to conceal your more unattractive soap results.

This Japanese specialty store sells cool sheets of paper for a fraction of the cost. The selection is a little smaller, but there are still some beautiful picks.

(Again, with some pretty-looking lemons and a cheap zester. Try the store closing sale at Linens ‘N’ Things)
Record Ultra Serious Personalized Gangsta Rap Homage
All you need is a friend who has Garage Band, and a couple of free hours. Spend an afternoon searching for inspiration on the bus with a notebook and a pair of those really big headphones. Should rap not really be your genre, even better. Be sure to pull out all of those old instruments you have in the closet from 7th grade music class. No one could possibly feel unsatisfied with a recorder solo. Cover art is always key.
You can always flush out your rap by presenting it on a personalized mix CD.
