The New York daily grind can kill you after a while. So why not phone in sick and actually enjoy the city for a day? Summer is just on the horizon and, to quote the Fresh Prince, "the weather is hot and girls are dressing less." The excel spreadsheets will still be there when you come back, but when humidity shows up it stays. I think you're beginning to catch my drift...
Not that I’m biased or anything, but I severely hate the Yankees. Growing up in a championship starved city like Philadelphia, I always appreciated the New York Mets sense of underdog-ism. It’s the last year they play in Shea Stadium before it gets torn down; something of a bittersweet goodbye for fans. You can get game day tickets for as little as $7.00 in some cases.
If you really want to make sure no one catches you, just leave Manhattan altogether. Brooklyn Botanic Garden is less than twenty minutes outside of the city and is free on Tuesdays. It’s serene, it’s peaceful, and it’s miles away from traffic. Bring a book, or casual romantic acquaintance.

If you do make the trip, I personally recommend also hitting up Joyce Bakeshop after the BBG. In the heart of Prospect Heights, Joyce serves fresh cups of Gorilla Coffee and their own take on the Black and White cookie – fresh baked cuts of yellow sponge cake with rich frosting smoothed on top. Sooo worth it…

The trip to the far reaches of Chinatown is not without it’s rewards. At Prosperity Dumpling, $1.00 gets you five dumplings, fried or steamed, meat or vegetarian; $2.00 get you ten. Enjoy one of the best cheap lunches you can find in the city.

After years of putting it off, you finally have an opportunity to take one of the most cliched tours in all of New York. Yes, it’s a bit on the pricey side, but there is a trade-off: New Yorkers are supposed to be passe about celebrities. Now you have an excuse to squeal like a girl if you see Andy Samberg grabbing a bagel… you’re from Marlton, New Jersey – remember?
FAO Schwarz
767 Fifth Avenue New York, NY 10153
It’s not as flashy as the Times Square Toys R Us, but FAO Schwarz is still the classic. Plus, there’s now a giant ice cream bar on the first floor. Stuff your face and then grab some jelly beans to feed to the squirrels in Central Park.
Pearl’s should always be a special occasion – they make the best lobster roll in the entire city. The wait can be tedious, but it’s well worth it. Plus their micro-brew selection is impressive. Grab a seat at the bar, order a pitcher, and the lobster roll. It’s like White Castle for rich people.

Going to the movies is always the old stand-by, so why not indulge your pretentious side and go to one of the most pretentious movie theaters in the city. Though Angelika gets very uppity with their mostly indie-mainstream fare, the coffee bar is awesome and the theaters are refreshingly, non-stadium old school. Plus, movie hopping is a breeze here with the right kind of finesse.

River To River Festival
Summer in New York is the best time to play hooky, simply enough because of The River To River Festival, which features some of the best outdoor concerts in the city. My personal picks would be the July 17th show, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, and the July 4 show, Sonic Youth. Maybe I’ll see you there, or I’ll be fighting you for a ticket.
