How To Catch a Celebrity

Celebrities tend to flock around certain locations. Whether it's where they work, live, eat, play or supposedly once slept, people want to be there to get a taste of that celeb. To help you on your way here's a list of San Francisco celeb spots that may warrant you a brush with fame... or a brush with a restraining order.

The Black House (Now Condos)

6114 California St, San Francisco, CA

I used to live on California St and had no idea I was half a block away from the Church of Satan’s ground zero. This house (was torn down and rebuilt as condos… boooooooo!) has a long and sordid history as a brothel turned Church of Satan. Marilyn Manson met the infamous high priest Dr. Anton LaVey here. Dr. LaVey allegedly materialized in front of Manson’s face.
Dr. LaVey also performed history’s first Satanic wedding and baptism here as well as raising his 500-pound lion, Togare.

LaVey said the roots of this house reached all the way to hell. So what I want to know is how the condos are doing in its place.

Danielle Steel's House

2280 Octavia St, San Francisco, CA 94109

While I don’t consider myself a big (or any kind of) Danielle Steel fan, her house is pretty amazing. Her mansion (built by the Spreckle family who made their millions in the sugar business) is the largest single family residence in San Francisco. It must make the people living in 500 square foot single family residences feel a little below average.

If you need any reviews of Steel’s novels I can ask my mom for you.

"Full House" House

712 Steiner St, San Francisco, CA

Get a picnic together, gather up the kids, the uncles, the girlfriends and Kimmy Gibbler, bring a boom box to play the Full House theme in the background, then head over to the Painted Ladies for a little Full House reenactment. Bonus points if you can actually get John Stamos to show up.

I knocked on all the doors, but was told Bob Saget was out of town.

If you plan your stay at the Phoenix Hotel to coincide with a big concert in San Francisco, there is a good chance of seeing the performer lounging poolside. Everyone from David Bowie to Nirvana to Keanu Reeves (you should really click that link) to Interpol and Franz Ferdinand have graced the sheets at the Phoenix

As a bonus for staying at the Phoenix, you can enjoy dodging hordes of homeless people and crack addicts in the city’s Tenderloin district.

Tartine Bakery

600 Guerrero St, San Francisco, CA 94110

Benjamin Bratt has been known to frequent this great bakery. It is worth the trip and the extra pounds you’ll gain by staking this place out to catch a glimpse of Bratt and his brood.

I can’t guarantee that he will be dressed like this when you see him at Tartine. But feel free to print the picture and have him sign it.

Steve Jobs' House

2108 Waverley St Palo Alto, CA 94306

Steve Jobs is synonymous with Apple. Ever since he came and saved Apple’s rear end from failing his smiling face has been everywhere. Check out where the business man lays his head and maybe you’ll even see him checking the mail in his boxers.

Oh Steve, you’re always so dapper.

Robin Williams's House

540 El Camino del Mar, San Francisco, CA

I used to run by Robin Williams’s house every day as I headed up to Lands End Trail. I never caught sight of the comedian, but I watched the growth progress of his dinosaur shaped hedges. Williams is a pretty common sight around San Francisco, especially on his road bicycle.

Check him out on Halloween for some sweet candy.

Rockit Room

406 Clement St, San Francisco, CA 94118

The Rockit Room used to be The Last Day Saloon, but it has always been a great place to catch bands before they go big. Train and Counting Crows both frequented The Last Day Saloon before blowing up. So slip into the comfy couches with a comfy drink and be able to say “I knew about that band way before they were big.”

Whether you’re upstairs or downstairs, the drinks taste the same.

Gavin Newsom's Office

1 Carlton B Goodlett Pl, San Francisco, CA

Oh Mayor Gavin Newsom. I love you and you’re Christian Bale circa American Psycho good looks.
I don’t think Newsom is quite the same as Patrick Bateman, but he fits the look. If you hang out long enough maybe you can get a job on his campaign team for governor!
