The Cats: A Spotlight on Los Gatos

Share on StumbleUpon Add to del.icio.us Share on Facebook

Nestled at the extreme southern edge of the bay area, Los Gatos is a great place to spend some time. Shopping, eating, riding paddle boats, there's never a dull moment in Los Gatos.

Los Gatos at a Glance

Forbes Mills Steak House

206 N Santa Cruz Ave, Los Gatos, CA 95030

Consistently one of the best steak houses in the Bay Area. They have a “Kobe” that comes from Australia that a lot of purists decry as not being authentic enough. I’ve never had a “real” Kobe steak, but this steak was one of the best I’ve had in my life. At a fraction of the cost of Japanese Kobe, it seems like a pretty good deal to me. They also had great sides, including some really spectacular creamed spinach.

It almost looks like a university.

Black and White Cookies

According to Jerry Seinfeld, the key is to get a little bit of black and a little bit of white in each bite.

Icing On the Cake

50 W Main St, Los Gatos, CA 95030

Crazy delicious bakery. Their specialty are their all butter pound cakes. They’re as dense as your college roommate and three times as tasty! Whenever I go I buy way more cookies than anyone should eat. The Black and White cookies are especially delicious.

Lunardi's Supermarkets

720 Blossom Hill Rd, Los Gatos, CA 95032

If you want to a classier level of shopping than what Safeway has to offer, Lunardi’s is the way to go. They have a smaller selection of packaged goods, but they tend to have more gourmet things (like picked asparagus, my favorite snack). They have a bakery and deli that must make regular supermarkets cry.

Campo Di Bocce of Los Gatos

565 University Ave, Los Gatos, CA 95032

If you’re not familiar with the rules of Bocce Ball, then you’re missing out. It’s a not terribly complicated game of rolling heavy balls towards a smaller ball and hoping that it lands as close as possible. Talking Trash is NOT optional. One of the best lawn games to play while drinking, next to lawn darts, of course. Campo Di Bocce serves you drinks and food while you hurl your balls around. They serve lunch and dinner and the food is really good.

Bocce Ball

I did a terrible job describing the rules to Bocce Ball. Let Wikipedia sort your out.

ZZ Top Tries to Help

I asked ZZ Top to tell you all a little something about Los Gatos. They thought I said “Las Vegas”, despite repeated attempts to clarify. Oh well.

Los Gatos High School

20 HIGH SCHOOL CT LOS GATOS, CA 95030

I don’t have kids yet, but when I do, they’ll need to go SOMEWHERE. It may as well be this place. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a great looking school building. Apparently, once upon a time the teen center associated with the school started getting some great bands playing through it. My friend saw Rilo Kiley there before they got bad.

Los Gatos High School Wikipedia Page

A surprisingly large amount of notable alumnae were churned out of this gorgeous school. I went to Santa Rosa High, where apparently Ernie Nevers (who?) and Robert Ripley (of Ripley’s Beleve it or Not Fame) hailed from my school. The school is more than a hundred years old and that’s the best we could do? Greeeeat.

Vasona Lake Park

Pretty, no?

Vasona Lake State Park

333 BLOSSOM HILL RD LOS GATOS, CA 95032

A gorgeous man made lake in the middle of Los Gatos, you can rent paddle boats, take a brisk walk around the lake, or just relax and “waste” the day doing nothing. Right around Christmas they decorate the park with lights and dioramas (Dinosaurs! Pirates! Santa Claus!). You get to cruise through slowly and listen to chinzy Christmas music pump through your car speakers.

Apple Retail Store

23 N SANTA CRUZ AVE LOS GATOS, CA 95030

If you live in the Silicon Valley, the mantra of “don’t go to the mall, don’t go to the mall, don’t go to the mall” is engrained into you. If you don’t have to drive to Oakridge Mall to oogle the Macbook Air or ask one of the Geniuses why your Mini keeps deciding that it doesn’t have an optical drive and therefore can’t eject your latest Netflixed disc for The Wire. There is something deeply appealing about a town that has an Apple Store as just another shop downtown.

Los Gatos Meats & Smoke House

575 University Ave, Los Gatos, CA 95032

Specializing in butchering and smoking their meats (or yours, if you’re a hunter), this little meat market also has a fantastic deli. They make all their cold cuts and sauces in house, and use fresh baked bread. What they lack in side dishes they more than make up for in slap-you-in-the-face delicious sandwiches. They have cases full of steaks and chicken and pork and ostridge and bacon and such. They even have a selection of exotic hotdogs and premade hamburgers including ones with cheese and bacon already mixed into the meat. Do yourself a favor and call ahead.

Los Gatos Meats

I almost forgot to mention the Jerky. If you can cut it into strips and dehydrate it, they’ve made it into delicious jerky. 14 varieties!
