Hip, urban and eclectic, Capitol Hill in Denver is a beautiful neighborhood with lots of personality, quirkiness and entertainment. Come see what the excitement is all about, and hurry before we close it down.
Where is it?
Capitol Hill is located just southeast of the downtown area, and is named for its proximity to the state capitol. It is bordered by Colfax, Broadway, 6th and Downing streets.
Short History
Capitol Hill has a rich history, reflected through the famous people who’ve lived there, including Titanic survivor Molly Brown and beat poet Jack Kerouac.
Will you be famous for living there? Maybe. There’s only one way to find out. Dig out that bad music you wrote for your band “Crack Kids with Guns” and play a show.
Personality
Capitol Hill (or Cap Hill for short) is a young community that prides itself on its eclectic flavor and eccentricity. There are punkers walking the streets with 12-inch mohawks next to men in business suits and cross-dressers. Overall, the mood and flavor of Cap Hill can be summed up in the word “eclectic.”
The large variety of things to do in Capitol Hill makes it a perfect dis-prover of Denver’s reputation as a cowtown. There’s biking in Cheesman Park, perusing the Botanic Gardens, clubbing on Broadway, visiting the chambers of the legislature at the capital, or rubbing elbows with the ghosts of Kerouac and Ginsburg at Charlie Brown’s. OK, OK, you won’t be out of place in boots and a hat. Though you may get confused for a member of the Village People.
What to Look Like
Image is a LOT in Cap Hill. Not just how good of shape you’re in, but what you flaunt. This includes dogs and bikes of all things.
Before you go, buy a bike from Turin. They rock and have probably the most informed staff in Denver.

Cheesman Park

Not technically in Capitol Hill, but considered by most to be part of it, this beautiful park is also quite a historic site. Formerly Prospect Hill Cemetary, Cheesman Park was converted in 1907 and currently houses a beautiful neoclassical pavilion and is right next door to the Denver Botanic Gardens. Ride your bike over the deceased! It’s fun!
Ball
There are probably more dogs than humans in Cap Hill. If you want to fit in, get one and show how in touch with nature you are.
One of the best restaurants in Denver, Luca D’italia has a great variety and some of the best seafood and pastas you’ll find outside of Italy.

Denver Botanic Gardens
1005 YORK ST DENVER, CO 80206
This beautiful 23-acre park has thousands of different plants to examine. The best time to visit is late spring/early summer, when most plants are blooming. Check their website for more information, as they offer various days of free entry throughout the year.
While there’s not much of a public transportation system in Capitol Hill, sometimes that’s not a bad thing.
What to do at Night
Go for the gusto and pick up a Miller High Life and get out there!
A renovated church, this nightclub features some famous djs on rotation from around the world. It’s part of a number of venues right on Broadway that showcase dance music.

Put on your beret and turtleneck, or whatever it is you hipsters are wearing nowadays, read some Tolstoy or Foucault and hit this hip little place in the heart of Cap Hill.

A favorite of the beat poets, Charlie Brown’s is a great little piano bar that has karaoke on Sundays and some great music the other days of the week. Come in and request Piano Man if you dare.

Have a beer and sing karaoke 7 nights a week. You can find me in here occasionally singing my butt off. Come boo me and receive a free boot to the head.

Where to Find Religion
For the spiritually-minded, there’s also a local Buddhist temple offering meditation classes at 10 dollars each. For out of the mainstream, try the Metaphysical Research Society’s beautiful building that offers a huge variety of spiritual groups and classes, from a local Golden Dawn Temple to classes on Quantum Spirituality.
In the course of things, Capitol Hill is probably the best place to live in Denver. I’ve lived in the area for a few years now and have never felt unsafe. All this despite being bordered by Colfax, I’d say that’s a small price to pay.
If you’re going to live in Cap Hill, you should be very open minded and tolerant. There’s a lot of difference between the people there and say, LoDo. This difference truly makes Cap Hill one of the best places in Denver though, so if you can handle the heat, jump into the oven.
