I would be lying if I said I was some camping expert- I'm not. My idea of camping is staying in a rustic cabin in the mountains, shower and toilet included. Peeing in bushes? Not exactly my idea of fun. That being said, this weekend I was coerced (and promised there would be s'mores and wine included) into camping for three days....it ended up being one of the best times I've ever had. The key is making sure you've got all the essentials, you know what to expect and you've got a few bottles of wine, chocolate and face wipes handy! So ladies, pack up and take a trip this summer!

For the cooking camper:

  • Saucepan and pot
  • BBQ grill grate (similar to an oven rack) in case the campground does not provide one with the fire pit
  • Forks, knives and spoons, which will play double duty for cooking and eating
  • Paper plates and bowls will save you clean up
  • Ziplock bags
  • Dish soap, sponge and towel
  • Paper towels
  • Plastic trash bags

AN ESSENTIAL FOR WOMEN CAMPERS:

Widget_azbw58nnpawj7_-eeqg-nk

Face wipes! Not that you’ll necessarily wear make up, while you’re camping-but it’s the easier alternative than trying to wipe of the dirt of the day with soap and water. This works just as well!

THE BEST THING ABOUT CAMPING IS: CURLING UP AROUND THE CAMPFIRE WITH A BOTTLE OF WINE

ESSENTIALS:

  • First aid kit
  • Sunscreen and lip balm with sunscreen
  • Insect repellant
  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • Camping lantern
  • Small whisk broom to sweep out tent
  • Cards or board games to keep busy in bad weather or at night
  • Handy wet wipes
  • Camera

Marked by gorgeous waterfalls and streams, awe-inspiring granite cliffs and dense forests, Yosemite National Park has diverse ecosystems that are a pleasure to explore and enjoy. In all, the park has over 800 miles of hiking trails and 350 miles of roads to explore: far more than you could travel during one, or even many, visits. Falling a height of 2,425 feet, Yosemite Falls are some of the tallest in the world and other sights, like the Half Dome and Yosemite Valley offer sights that are one-of-a-kind. Located just under 100 miles north of Fresno and just over 100 miles from Modesto, the park is hugely popular during the spring and summer months. If you're looking for a campsite, make reservations well in advance as they often fill up months ahead of time.

It's not a camping trip unless S'mores are involved

This is pretty romantic:

Petit Jean State Park (Arkansas): This park is named for a beautiful young Frenchwoman, Adrienne Dumont, whose love led her to what was then the ends of the earth. When her fiancĂ© departed to explore the New World, she disguised herself as a cabin boy named Jean (John) in order to follow him. He only discovered her true identity when she became gravely ill; when she died, she was buried on the mountain that now bears the sailors’ nickname for her, Petit Jean. One of the park’s most popular hikes ends at the overlook at her gravesite. Among the park’s natural charms are its many waterfalls (including the 90-foot Cedar Falls), deep emerald pools, high limestone bluffs, ancient pictographs, and winding canyons.

About 160 miles to the southwest, you’ll also find Crater of Diamonds State Park, where you can hunt for real diamonds and keep any you find.

Campfire Songs:

  1. Anything by the Beatles
  2. Anything by Fleetwood Mac
  3. Kum Ba Yah (obviously)
  4. Cats in the Cradle
  5. Folsom Prison Blues
  6. Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley
  7. Anything by Bob Marley
  8. Better Together- Jack Johnson
  9. Our House
  10. True Colors
  11. Any James Taylor
  12. Baby, I love your way
  13. Mrs. Robinson

TIP: Stick to colors that will look good when dirty.

Five distinct islands comprise Channel Islands National Park, where the miles of sea that separate these specks of land from the mainland keep the park quiet and secluded for nature lovers to enjoy. Thousands of years ago, these islands were home to tribes of humans who have left their marks behind for dedicated archaeologists to uncover. The United States military has also held various bases and outposts on the islands, though all but one have now been abandoned. For the most part, these islands are simply almost untouched wildernesses, with abundant room for hiking, fishing, wildlife watching, whale spotting and more. While the visitors centers are accessible by car, being located in Santa Barbara and Ventura, the islands can only be reached by boat or plane. Private companies offer both transportation options, but private boat travel is also allowed.

Perfect for all types of water sports, Lake McConaughy is a massive dam, stretching up to 20 miles long and 4 miles wide when full, with well-maintained white sand beaches. Fishing at the lake is some of the best in the state, making it a primary draw to the area; the most common catches are rainbow trout, catfish, walleye, and a number of species of bass. The lake is located 8 miles north of Ogallala, and visitors can either return to town for the night or set up camp by the lake.

Sex outdoors? Yes. Totally acceptable.

Often campsites have restrooms and showers, and often-if you’re hardcore, they don’t. The best is to be prepared with; bandanas, scarfs, hats or ponytail/braids. Get a little greasy, who cares!

Take a Romantic Camping Trip.....wine and cheese are a must.

FUN, FUN, FUN!

Play horseshoes, ride bikes, go hiking, swim in a lake, try out fishing, meditate by the river, play night time hide and seek, and sing campfire sings (yes, seriously.)

You'll need to sing around the campfire- YOU HAVE TO.

I have the “I love not camping” postcard and magnet hanging in my room. Because seriously? I hate camping. I’ll never get over it, but I guess it’s possible I’d let my bf convince me otherwise. Your guide gives me hope I wouldn’t want to kill myself at least.

The pod of Mother Earth
You know you're going to give your kid a complex if you call them "The Mean Bean" instead of; sweetiepie, sugar face, bear, etc. My nickname stuck- even when I got nicer. AND my affinity for all things BEAN happens to be tremendous; Coffee beans (my coffee feign), Cocoa beans, Vanilla beans, chic...
