Cafeteria Delicious-ness? Or not?

Now that I'm a grown up I miss the days of cafeteria lunches. Well, until I eat in one. What cafeteria meals make your stomach growl? How about groan?

Oh the choices!

The monthly menu.

Beefaroni

(aka goulash). Always served with a slice of white bread with butter. Beefaroni sandwiches for the win!

Open Faced Turkey Sandwich

The gravy? Always congealed and lumpy. The bread? Mushy in the middle with perpetually stale crusts. The rock in my stomach? Heaven!

Tater Tots

TOTS! YUM!

Whenever I tried to make these at home, they don’t end up the perfect crispy/mushy combination that they always were at school. :(

"Mexican" Pizza

It came in a hexagon shape, which I LOVED. What comes in a hexagon?!? Absolutely magical. What made it Mexican? I don’t know. Basically, it had cheddar cheese, spices and (I think) sausage. There was minimal to no sauce. Tasty.

WAWHO Spaghetti day! It was tied for the favorite lunch day with the turkey day. It would come with frozen peaches that I don’t know what was so special about but i would beat up kids for their spaghetti and peaches!

Pierogies!

Widget_dzy69bj8nc4r3raltmibwd

I miss school lunches, even almost 10 years after having one. Nothing like getting an entire meal for $1.25 and then super sizing it (getting doubles or triples) for only 1 dollar more. There wasn’t one meal I didn’t like, or at least wouldn’t eat, but pierogies had to be my favorite. Extra butter please!

Mixed Vegetables

shudder
My mom had to have a meeting with my third grade teacher because every ‘mixed vegetable’ day I ended up in the nurses office with a stomach ache.

Ham Patty

Usually on a roll. However, this picture appropriately induces a gag. I ate them religiously until I violently vomited for an entire 48 hours.

Chicken Pot Pie

Oh, I love me some chicken pot pie. I would bring my lunch every day, peanut butter and jelly day in and day out, with the exception of the rare and glorious chicken pot pie day. Yum.

School Pizza

Widget_ahappuv99aaa9lpjecfz94

I think that it was some twisted school administrator that actually came up with the idea for pizza in school. They had to think of something that conformed to the high standards of then president Reagan, who stated that ketchup qualified as a vegetable in a school lunch. So voila! Pizza! Not only was it like eating the actual box that pizza would come in, it can be theorized that the “cheese” was possibly obtained from questionable milk sources. (See Simpson’s episode from 1998 when the mob runs the school lunch program and decides to give the kids rat milk in order to save money)

Second on the pizza. If you didn’t get pizza on pizza Tuesdays at my grade school, the cool kids would make fun of you.

Ditto on the calendar/menu. That was so exciting! Boys in my school had a habit of putting ranch dressing on pizza, which I only did when I hit my 20s. Not bad!

Love the picture of the monthly menu. Hilarious! I totally remember those as a kid and circling the days I was really looking forward to…

ElGuapo: I was JUST going to add Salisbury steak! The nightmare of my youth. Good to know my elementary school wasn’t the only one serving this confusing mess
