The pastries and snacks at this Cuban coffee shop are buttery and delicious, even if most of them do all taste like they're made from the same shortening. But really, where else are you going to find a homemade guava empanada, or brick of banana bread?

Strong Coffee, Stronger Hipsters

The tables are welcoming and big enough to spread out your paper, laptop, or to sit with a couple friends.  Located in the heart of Silverlake (Sunset and Parkman), it’s a great neighborhood destination. Head’s up, though: hipsters abound.  The clientele’s always friendly, but if you’re wary of skinny indie guys with skinnier jeans, or girls with fashionable mullets, this might not be your place.

On the other hand, the scene can make for some great people-watching while you sip your cafe con leche.  The coffee is strong enough to peel paint.  And who doesn’t appreciate that quality in a hot beverage?

Great post, mang. One of my friends is one of those true coffee snobs that only frequents Intelligentsia in Silverlake, but I heard good things about Cafe Tropical too… Then again, I don’t go out and buy tens of thousands of dollars worth of espresso making equipment either. So I guess we can chalk it up to the have and have-nots once again.

I write plays and play drums in a band called Les Blanks. I like coffee, jukeboxes, and am always searching for a cool bar with a patio that can top The Red Lion. I tell myself I don't like the West Side, but inevitably have fun whenever I go (beach envy?)
