Shadow of a Doubt
My favorite Hitchcock film, mostly because it’s shot in my home town. A super creepy story of a young woman (Teresa Wright) who suspects that the uncle she’s named after (Joseph Cotten) may be a serial killer. The movie is made all the more unsettling because there is no “is she right or is she just misinterpreting what she sees” shenanigans. You know he’s a killer the whole time. The suspense comes from wondering if she’ll put together what she knows before Uncle Charlie puts together what she knows and silences her.
If you’re going up to see some of the places the movie was shot, here are some cool places to check out nearby.

Sharing a parking lot with the no longer in use train station where Uncle Charlie arrives (and ultimately departs…heh heh heh), this little coffee shop is a great place to hang out and have a cup of tea or some ice cream. They serve food, but it’s way overpriced for the portion size. At night it becomes packed with bored high school kids, so be warned.

A great independent book store that thrives in the shadow of the huge Barns and Noble down the street. It also sits in the shadow of Courthouse Square, which is the setting of the thrilling walking based chase sequence in the history of cinema. A fusion of sushi and barbeque shouldn’t work, yet something magical happens amid the plates of edamame and onion rings at Guy Fieri’s crazed resturant. In addition to traditional raw fish sushi, Tex Wasabi’s also serves “Gringo Sushi”, featuring things like pulled pork and blackened chicken in tapioca wrappers. It sounds completely insane, but it’s a delicious way to top off a trip to Santa Rosa, especially if you’re traveling with people who don’t like sushi.

I swear I am not making this place up.
Vertigo
Hitchcock’s technicolor ode to San Francisco and soul consuming obsession lays out a path for a fun afternoon in the city. Just look out for nuns!
100 34th Ave, San Francisco, CA 94121
If you’re looking for Carlotta Valdez’s portrait, you’ll be out of luck. It isn’t there. However, you’ll recognize a lot of other paintings from the movie. It’s also a fantastic art museum in its own right, and a really pretty place to have a picnic.

I heard this song before I saw the movie. It makes a LOT more sense now.
21600 Big Basin Way 406, Boulder Creek, CA 95006
A little bit of a drive from San Francisco, but totally worth it. The perfect place to fall in love with a fraud, and to see some great redwood trees. There’s a lot of great hiking to be found. If you’re hard core you can go on the 35 mile backpacking camping/hike that will take you from Castle Rock to Waddell Beach. I’m not saying you should, but you can.

A fantastic book if you’re interested in more information. The best part is the collection of pictures that contrast the way a scene looked in the movie vs. how it looks now.
The Birds
I had really good memories of this film, but watching it recently was somewhat disappointing. There are some good scenes, especially the playground and the gas station. There are also quite a few fun places along Bodega Bay if you want to see the locations for the film and then spend the rest of the day at the beach.
Bodega Schoolhouse Tours
7110 Bodega Lane, Bodega, CA 94922
No longer a working school house, the owners now give tours to fans of the movie. It’s interesting to note that the geography has changed quite a bit for the movie. You can’t run to the Tides from the school house, no matter how many birds are chasing you.
800 Highway 1, Bodega Bay, CA 94923
While not the dive bar refuge seen in the movie, this restaurant at the Tides Wharf serves some killer seafood. You can sit down at the restaurant for some smoked salmon, or take a pint of clam chowder to go for an on the beach picnic.

Despite the fact that she full on blasphemes by relegating Vertigo to the honorable mention category (Camp? CAMP? Are you kidding me?), the brilliant Majnoonita has put together a fantastic group of thrillers shot or set in the City by the Bay.
Doran Beach
201 Doran Beach Rd., Bodega, CA 94923
A great beach to go to and enjoy the beauty of the bay. You can bring your dog, and camping is allowed, if you enjoy beach camping.
Presidio Of Sf, San Francisco, CA 94129
This is the cool fort where Madeline passes out and falls into the water. It’s open to the public, and gives you a view of the Golden Gate Bridge that you’ve likely never seen before. Just don’t go swimming. Jimmy Stewart is dead, and he wont be jumping in after you.

I’m not quite sure where Scottie takes Judy to go shopping, but if you want to dress your new girlfriend up like your dead girlfriend without fully knowing that they’re the same person, you can’t go wrong with Christian Dior. The fact that she’s going along with this deserves to be rewarded.

They’ve painted the door, but you can still recognize it. Leave whomever lives there alone.
