Gimme Chocolate NOW in New York!

Share on StumbleUpon Add to del.icio.us Share on Facebook

What is the saying? Chocolate is a girl's best friend? I'm pretty sure it's something like that, and New York is good to its 53% female population and its cocoa needs. And I'm not referring to all those Godiva outposts that tempt you with mediocre chocolate-covered strawberries. No, you deserve the good stuff! The iddy-biddy truffle that cost more than subway fare or piece of tollhouse pie that is equated in price and heft with a dinner entree. Indulge!

Go on a Chocolate Date--YUM!

I know no girl, no matter how un-girly and atypical, who would decline and/or hate on the chocolate date idea. For me, it’s the excuse to eat dessert and perhaps call it a meal. To splurge on truffles, or a brownie and wine combo, in a cozy atmosphere, the smell of cocoa EVERYWHERE as you stare into someone’s eyes. Irresistible!

Who Needs to go on a Date?

Chocolate Bar

But whatever, shit happens, you are date-less and you still deserve chocolate. Go get some. ;)

Cocoa Bar

228 7th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11215

I spent a post-splurge dinner here with a significant other where we splurged some more. In the back is where a small laptop crowd hangs out, but overall, it’s a lot of couples and groups of girls. The menu pairs particular types of wines with chocolates, which is a clever way to get you to buy more!

The window seat with pillows is the absolute best, as you can devour your chocolate and be eye candy for all of the 7th Avenue foot traffic.

Chocolate Room

86 5th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217

Park Slope’s rival chocolate eatery has a different feel from Cocoa Bar. Roughly about the same size, the Chocolate Room feels like a busy, crowded brunch restaurant, rather than a quiet, cozy cafe, which is to say, it has all the makings of being a romantic spot, but it doesn’t quite come together.

But, it’s so good! Upon sitting down, they bring you a taste of whatever the new concoction is. Last time I went, it was chocolate sorbet, and at the risk of sounding cliched, it was to die for!

Chocolate Bar

127 East 7th Street New York, NY 10009

The prime (read: annoying) MePa District location of the original Chocolate Bar unfortunately meant closing time this past spring. The upside to this is that you can get your chocolatey fix at the new East Village location! Okay, on weekends, it’s swamped, but you can get delectable egg creams, chocolate Chai, and various to-go items (chocolate bars and candy).

Fine Chocolate Shops

Manhattan alone has no shortage of chocolate shops, even if many of the names are unknown to you. Back in the day, I was a mystery shopper and the company was lucky enough to work with (spy on) Godiva! Which meant, every trip resulted in $$$ as well as $8 worth of chocolate. Sadly, this means I am more familiar with this nationwide chain’s goodies than any other Manhattan chocolate store. But, I shall try to guide you nonetheless.

Lilac Chocolates Inc

40 8th Ave, New York, NY 10014

I used to cull together a lunch from various Grand Central eateries and Li-Lac figured into many of them. (This is the cuter West Village locale) A chocolate shop? Um…yeah…I have a raging sweet tooth. I’d buy the little chocolate-covered marzipan logs and have a blessed sugar high that would carry me through the next job.

LA Maison Du Chocolat

1018 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10075

That’s fancy speak for HOUSE OF CHOCOLATE in case you didn’t catch that. This place makes me feel nervous in a way only Madison Avenue ritzy stores do. I fear the chocolate in here, so much so that I can’t buy it. I can look…and ogle…but I cannot buy.

Black Hound

170 2nd Avenue, New York, NY 10003

This place taunted me when I was a poor, starving teacher living around the corner. Chocolate is an art at Black Hound. Have you SEEN what’s in the their 2nd Avenue windows? I take back what I said about Madison Avenue cocoa shops—it’s all ritzy ones that make me feel not worthy! Like, of Wayne’s World on-my-knees “We’re not worthy” stature.

Recipe for the BEST CHOCOLATE CAKE evah!

I know, you think I don’t have the right to make that claim, and it’s my recipe, so now you think I’m a little cocky (a lot cocky?), but this really is the best chocolate cake ever. I’m not even a cake person and I LOVE it. And it’s vegan. What?!? Get bakin’!

The BIG TIME Chocolate Makers

This ain’t Hershey land (though it’s only a few hours away), but we’ve got chocolate makers and factories a-plenty! I am a sucker for anything homemade, especially sweets, and I love watching the dessert-creating process.

Scharffen Berger Chocolate Makers

473 Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY 10024

The big factory is in San Francisco, but whatever, New York is going to compete anyways with a little Scharffen Berger store on the Upper West Side. In terms of American-made national brands, I think Scharffen Berger is one of the best, which means you’ll pay up the wazoo for it. WORTH IT.

Jacques'torres Chocolate Haven

350 Hudson St, New York, NY 10014

Lucky Jacques can be proud to own mrchocolate.com and he just opened a third branch of his chocolate shop on the Upper West Side. This Hudson Street location is the one to visit if you’re curious about the chocolate-making process, however.

Completely enclosed in glass, you can watch how it’s done! More interesting is Jacques’ back story: he was a baker as a kid, but in adulthood, on a bet, he asked a Michelin 2-star chef for a job and that began a lifelong career in upscale food.

Mr. Chocolate, i.e., Jacques Torres

Jacques Torres Chocolate

66 Water Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201

Dumbo’s Jacques Torres is pretty tiny, but it’s got a small “factory” cranking out the divine ice cream sandwich ingredients and you can even take a tour. If the line is too long at Fulton Ferry’s ice cream shop, bite into one of Torres’ ice cream sandwiches.

Clearly trying to outdo the ole’ frozen banana pop (at Max Brenner).

141 2nd Avenue, New York, NY 10003

Chocolate pizza? You’ve got to be kidding me. The cheesy, “too much” factor initially made a lot of folks ambivalent about this Union Square/East Village venue, but they do have some unique cocoa concoctions. The extensive menu is surprisingly normal (you can go have crepes and sandwiches), but if you’re feeling adventurous, there’s the Chocolate syringe, Churros Fondue, and the Chocolate Mess, which you can read about on their site.

Chocolate Tour, Chocolate Tour!

Who needs museums and cultural institutions when you can eat your way through Manhattan chocolate shops and intimately get to know the city that way? Of course New York has chocolate tours!

Choose from the UES Luxury Chocolate Tour, New Cuisine Chocolate Tour or the Union Square Chocolate, Wine & Culture Tour. These heavenly walks WILL set you back $70, but you probably won’t regret it after chomping on bonbons all day.

This isn’t an organized walk, but rather a assembling of suggested stops if you were to make your own chocolate tour of the city.

Every winter, the models descend, but they aren’t scantily clad in silky wraps and faux fur scarves, but in CHOCOLATE! The Chocolate Show is something to be seen.
