It can be a gamble. Throwing all your chips in on the hot chocolate offered at any number of Boston's cafes. To find yourself with a to-go cup of ::gasp!:: Swiss Miss after paying a pretty penny, it just doesn't seem just. Here is a list of reliable hot chocolates -- and a few to avoid - that I've sleuthed out in Greater Boston.

Flour Bakery & Cafe

Hot chocolate was very milky and the cup was tall. It lacked original flavor, though. Was Hershey’s syrup the base I tasted?

They tried to pull a Swiss Miss on me when I ordered the hot chocolate. Miss is not Swiss. Miss wants some cocoa from the Emerald Isle.

The hot chocolate is rich, creamy and no, not like Ovaltine at all. I would say it is not as amazing as Burdick’s, but better than anything I’ve had on this side of the river. Connoisseur (moi)’s tip – drop an xtra .50 for a raspberry marshmallow and pop that baby in your mug— instant flavored cocoa.

Ula Cafe

The spicy hot chocolate didn’t thrill me. It was tasty, but perhaps I’m just not all that into cayenne dancing with cocoa.

Burdick L A Chocolates

Whether you go for the milk or dark hot chocolate, you will be tasting the best hot chocolate on the planet, BARnone (forgive a pun). I don’t know what the magic ingredient is and I don’t care to know. The charming Parisian cafe in the heart of Harvard Square will always have my heart at hello. Don’t even bat an eyelash at the $4.50 for a large. You’d spend as much for a grande at Starbucks, and it won’t be half as good.

I have lived in Boston for 6 years, though I will always drink pop and wear tennis shoes as a nod to my Mid-Western roots. Presently, my time is equally divided - writing, baby whispering, and wifely duties make me a busy gal.
