Bonjour! Feeling French in New York City

-621044518

New York is a city abounding with culture, a melting pot of flavors, people, history, ethnicities, etc. and as a person who is constantly craving travel, crepes, and the charm of Europe I find that I have to seek it out, or these little spots can be overlooked. After my very first visit to France I knew that I needed/wanted to live there eventually, the moment I saw a man riding a red bicycle, whistling while holding a bouquet of flowers in one hand and a baguette in the other. Sadly, I have yet to see that man in New York City, but I have managed to find French inspired locations that will keep my dream of France alive, ou revoir!!

Maybe it's not FROM France.....

…..but it has the word FRENCH in it, doesn’t that count?
What is this you ask?

FRENCH TOAST!

Brunch is a popular weekend past time in New York City. Sunday brunch is the last hooray before heading back into a busy work schedule, it’s also a “free day” for some dieters, and what better way to blow calories than on egg dipped, thick French Toast!

If you’re like me, and work from home (and also shun diets) visit Paris Commune, where brunch is served 7 DAYS A WEEK.

FOOD STAPLE:

NUTELLA!!!!

Since my first trip back from Paris, France I have not a cupboard that didn’t have Nutella as a permanent staple next to peanut butter. In France my crepes were made like Chipotle burritos, stuffed with bananas and thick Nutella, in New York….they get a little flimsy, nonetheless they are still delicious.

I have yet to find someone to FEED me my crepes, I think that would be the ultimate French experience. Hm…

French Onion Soup

I told you I love melted cheese.

Maybe French Onion Soup isn’t the best thing to eat at an intimate date with a French sweetie, but is IS delicious. Onion breathe is definitely worth a satisfied stomach.

Romance in Paris means there should also be romance in New York City?! Oui?

Ah.....to melt....

And I don’t mean Global Warming. I mean FONDUE!

Growing up as a dancer, I heard the word fondue while in ballet class almost DAILY. Little did I know it was such a delicious food until recently. The last thing I was going to  do when I was wearing pink tights and a leotard on a daily basis, was dive into a bowl of melted cheese. Thankfully, I have retired the tights and have embraced my new found love for all things melted. Cheese, chocolate, etc. crusty bread dipped into gruyere, or plump strawberry’s dipped into piping hot dark chocolate….oh. my.

The Bourgeois Pig not only feels French but feels a little bit like you just walked onto the set of Moulin Rouge. Crushed velvet, dim lighting, decadent cushions for lovers to cuddle up on while feeding each other….doesn’t get more French than that!

Next time I go I’m taking a date, instead of my six girlfriends (bad choice.)

Did somebody say, fondue??

Trois Crepes Inc

501 E 75th Street, New York, NY 10021

Trois Crepes Pastisserie not only has the best crepes in New York, but they specialize in French regional specialties. Meaning: Madeleine’s, Macaron’s, assorted candies, etc.

Worried that all these pastries are going to make you blow up like a balloon....??

YEAH, so was I.
The great thing about eating “like the French” is being able to indulge, enjoying pastries and champagne, it’s all about allowing yourself the pleasure of food.

Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Don’t Get Fat, says this,

“The basic premise of French Women Don’t Get Fat is that you should eat only
good food of very high quality, eat it in small portions, and savor every
bite.

From chocolate to champagne, eat slowly, with all your senses, and make every
dining experience pleasurable so you will be satisfied with smaller portions of
delicious food. No food is off limits, only large portions. No counting
calories, no skipping meals — just control what you eat.”

Sounds like something I could do! I guess that means I don’t get to eat a crepe AND French toast in one day? Damn.

Visit the Statue of Liberty, after all France DID give it to us as a gift!

Je t'aime.....

Part of what I LOVE about France, is the feeling of romance. Lovers on street corners, extreme PDA, FRENCH kissing, and the buzz of energy surrounding those in love. Sparks fly in France, so why not make them FLY in New York City…..GENTS, Go grab your lady some flowers on your way home, then maybe that steamy night you’ve been waiting for will finally transpire?

Hi Chelsea, just a note about your french goodbye: ou revoir, no.. au revoir, yes :-) (“à + le” revoir → au revoir) btw, thx for the tips in NYC.

Forgive the extremely vague recommendation, but there’s an awesome little cafe in Williamsburg – on the corner of North 6th and Bedford Avenue – that makes some of the best French brunch you’ve ever had… nice work.
