Did the video or the remake kill the radio star?

Remaking, or covering, another artist's song is risky business. A great cover can do wonders for your reputation. Many kids these days learn some of the classics because of the remakes (or Rock Band.) But a bad cover? Well that will get you put on some of the "What the !@#$ were they thinking?!" lists. Bad covers only help the original artist. Songs that have been forgotten are now being talked because YOU effed it up. These are some of my picks for the best and the worst cover songs. What are yours?

Damien Rice - Hallelujah

Leonard Cohen’s original is beyond beautiful. There have been countless covers of this song, but Damien Rice’s is right up there with Cohen’s if you ask me.

"If You Were Here" - Cary Brothers

LOVE, love, love Sixteen Candles. Originally performed by The Thompson Twins.

"Come On Eileen" - Save Ferris

Originally performed by Dexys Midnight Runners.

Elephant Love Medley - Moulin Rouge

This song is full of covers. Can you name them all?

Because - Across The Universe

Why? Because. Song originally by The Beatles. I love that Across the Universe didn’t ruin any of The Beatles. They made them unique without taking away from the original.

"You'll Be A Woman Soon" - Urge Overkill

This is from the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. Great movie. Great song. Great cover.

William Shatner - Common People

I had to put one in the positive column for Shatner. I agree that Rocket Man was terrible, but Pulp’s “Common People” is pretty decent.

A.C. Newman-- Take On Me

A.C. Newman does a GREAT cover of a-ha.

Nirvana - "The Man who Sold the World"

One of the best cover songs ever! Nirvana took a classic David Bowie song and made it their own.

George Michael - "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me"

I really like the live version George Michael does, and at one point, he introduces Elton John, who comes out on stage to sing.
I believe this qualifies as a cover? Yes?

"American Pie" - Madonna

Another classic down the !@#$ter.

"She's Like The Wind" by Lumidee

She’s out of your reach because you’re dressed like an idiot.

Ashley Tisdale - Kiss the Girl

The Little Mermaid will always be my favorite Disney movie. I grew up with it, watched it at least thirty times and still sing the songs in the shower. It was NOT necessary to remake the song. Ugh it’s going to take me at least a week to get her face out of my head.

"Barbie Girl" - MXPX

This song sucked the first time.

"You Shook Me All Night Long" - Celine Dion

Oh no. No no no no no. There are so many things wrong with this I don’t know where to start.

"Rocket Man" by William Shatner

I’m really torn on this one. On one hand, it’s William Shatner and this is a classic piece of musical history. On the other hand…it’s horrible.

Behind Blue Eyes - Limp Bizkit

I’m sorry, but “Nookie” robbed him of any and all credibility. And don’t think I forgot about that Faith cover. He ruined that, too.

"Let It Be" - Some Russian guy

I think this is the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man singing The Beatles’ “Let It Be.”

311 - "Love Song"

With the original Cure version, you can hear the longing and emotion in Robert Smith’s voice. With 311, on the other hand, you don’t get that. It’s just . . . blah. Besides, The Cure and reggae are just two things that should never go together!

The English Beat - "Tears of a Clown"

BEST. Funky ska version of the classic Smokey Robinson tune. Awesome!

Scissor Sisters - "Comfortably Numb"

WORST. OH GOD MAKE IT STOP MAKE IT STOP MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!!!!!
