Summer Makes My Mouth Water
I must profess that I have a love-hate relationship with summer. I hate the heat, but I love the food that comes along with it. But I am willing to put up with near triple digit temperatures for ribs and barbecued corn. What summertime foods make you wiling to put up with God-awful heat/humidity?
Corn on the Cob
I LOVE corn on the cob— it’s super tasty when it’s barbecued, but if I’m making it just for me I’ll throw it some boiling water for a couple minutes and BOOM. Perfection.
Carne Asada Tacos
I eat tacos all year around, but during the summer my taco consumption definitely hits an all-year high (to counter balance this effect my tamale consumption goes up during the winter months.) There’s just something about eating carne asada tacos on a summer’s night with some cervezas. Mmmmm…
Green Papaya Salad
This is one of my favorite dishes to get when I go out for Vietnamese food, and it’s seriously the perfect dish for summer. Something about a cold salad with cilantro just screams “eat me for dinner” when it’s hot out.
Gelato
I can eat ice cream all year around, hell, I can eat ice cream for breakfast. However, something has to be said for eating a cup of gelato on a hot day— the fruitier the flavor the better (no disrespect to hazlenut or pistachio, but lemon, melon, or something berry-like is just a better fit for summer).
Black Apricots
At first glance you’d think this was just your ordinary, run-of-the-mill plum. But au contraire, this is the marvel known as the black apricot. Ever so slightly fuzzy on the outside and absolutely delicious on the inside.
Ribs
You can’t really talk about summer or bbq for that matter without talking about ribs. I definitely don’t eat NEARLY as much ribs as I would like. I need to rectify this ASAP.
Ice cream sandwiches
In special flavors!
Pluots
Whenever I go to the farmers’ market during the summer I have to get pluots (a cross between a plum and an apricot)— no matter what variety you get they’re totally delicious.
Tomato Bread Pudding
Well, tomatoes really. But summer to me is having so many tomatoes in the garden, we don’t even know what to do with them all. So, we make tomato bread pudding, which is absolutely delicious. Some day when I live in a house with a normal-size yard, I will plant so many tomatoes I don’t know what to do with them too!

Watermelon Juice
I love eating watermelon during the summer, but lately I’ve become obsessed with watermelon juice. It’s the most refreshing drink. EVER. Throw in some vodka, rum, or tequila and I think it would make for an awesome cocktail.
Hot Dogs
When it gets out hot out, I automatically start craving hot dogs— it’s like genetics or something.
Nectarines
I like peaches, but I don’t love the fuzz on the outside, so given the choice I’d probably go with a nectarine instead. As for yellow or white, now that’s a harder decision…
Tzatziki
Ok, this is REALLY random, but this Greek dip (made of yogurt, garlic, cucumber, and lemon juice) is the perfect condiment for summer (sorry, ketchup— you know I still love you.) It’s super good on pita sandwiches, on lamb burgers, grilled salmon, and pretty much anything else you can think of.
If you make this, I will come over to your house for dinner.
Avocados
I eat avocados year around, but they are a mainstay of my diet during the summer. My current obsession is mango, avocado, and tomato salsa— goes great with grilled chicken.
Mint Lemon Cucumber Gin drinks
Gin is good year-round, but mint lemon cucumber gin drinks (the one pictured here is called a Miller Smash) are really summer-time libations. Refreshing on these sweltering days in the city.
