Right now it's much trendier to order a Pabst and a shot of cheap whiskey and be done with it, but I just can't abide. I'm a Booze Bourgeoise, you see. Cultivating a taste for specialty booze can be expensive (not to mention aggravating to your poor liver), but once you get a taste of the good life, there's no going back. Care to divulge your favorite bourgie boozes?
Ron Pampero Aniversario Reserva Exclusiva - Venezuela
I’m not much of a rum drinker; I blame this on my first summer at college when I apparently thought that “Captian Morgan’s” was the only alcoholic beverage on the market.
But when the warm weather hits and the craving for Rum blows in along with it, a glass of Aniversario with a couple of ice cubes is just the thing.
It’s a dark rum and not sweet, it finishes crisp. Although it’s from Venezuela, it’s easier to find than Cuarenta Y Tres, so keep an eye out for it!
Cuarenta Y Tres - Spain
Super bourgie cred, as it is super expensive and from Spain, so it can be hard to come across. If you have family, like I do, from Spain, make sure they grab you some and then share liberally!!
I like to drink Cuarenta Y Tres as an apertif – it tastes like liquid caramel only lighter and with a bite at the end.
Seriously, if you ever get the chance, try it. Just don’t get carried away as it can leave you in quite a state the next morning.
Pliny the Elder - Russian River Brewing Co
Like hoppy beer? Like beer so hoppy that it’s actually like chewing a fresh hop in your mouth?
Then this is the beer for you!
I keep wanting to try Pliny the Younger but every time I get to a pub that has them both, I just go back to ordering the Elder. So good!
Little Sumpin Sumpin Ale - Lagunitas Brewing
A great summer beer. Also love the name. It’s always a tough call to either go with this one, or Big Daddy IPA . . .
Malbec
This isn’t actually that bourgie as its fairly inexpensive and accessible – it’s just kind of a secret how much the Argentinians have been doing with their wine!
There are a lot of cheap ($8-$10) bottles of Malbec that are awesome.
Yum.
Oban Scotch
Scotch for the younger crowd – “smoky, malty dryness”; it’s not like chewing on an old leather shoe.
Any indie or hipster cred. you have established will go straight to hell if you order this out at the bar. You’ve been warned.
Glenfiddich Single Malt Whiskey - 15 yr
MMMmmmm.
18yr and 21 ain’t bad either, but 15 ’ll do the trick!
Hendrick's Gin
It really is worth the fuss and $. It’s all about that dose of cucumber it has, such a nice complement to the juniper berry-derived liquor.
Cabo Wabo
I’d have to say this is on par if not better than Patron . . . their website design is also superior, if that counts for anything.
MACALLAN 12
It’s a smooth & nutty choice. But usually costs about $14 a shot.
