West Laurel Hill is a rolling – and I mean seriously rolling - park, arboretum, sculpture garden. And cemetery. Why walk your dog in a cemetery? Easy – none of the neighbors will complain! Even better, it’s one of the most beautiful parks in an area famous for its urban gardens. West Laurel Hill is a mid-19th century cemetery that was built to house some of Philly’s finest. The number of different mausoleums, which include classical Greek and early Hobbit, creates the impression of a small village – and indeed, many of the monuments include benches and stone seats. A lot of the mausoleums have glass doors, perfect for peeking inside. The 187 acre cemetery is also a sculpture garden (the Calders are buried here) and an arboretum, with flowering trees and bushes. It’s appropriately stark at Halloween and gorgeous in the spring. Because it’s so large, there are marked street signs throughout the cemetery. Be sure and check out the original receiving vaults ((positively Poe) at the old entrance, as well as the McNeill family spread. Hours and Directions: http://www.forever-care.com/contact.php
