Nothing screams romance more than inviting your date out to enjoy a beautiful afternoon under the sky on a picnic. A sort of getaway if you will. One where you can both enjoy each others company and a delicious meal in a romantic setting that veers coyly away from the sometimes hectic and loud environment of a local restaurant. Nothing says you enjoy romancing more then by feeding your sweetheart a ripe cherry underneath the shade of a tree at your favorite picnic spot. Arizona happens to have plenty of great spots like these—I have gone ahead and detailed what I feel to be the best of them in this guide for you. Steer away from conventional restaurant romance and enjoy a picnic in Arizona at these awesome parks.

The Railroad Park

The Railroad park in South Scottsdale, Arizona is known worldwide and was built more than fifty years ago to commemorate the many railroads that helped to spawn the settlement of the Wild West. It also happens to be great place to go for a picnic and for a great number of good reasons.

The park is very large and features several different and attractive features. They have a huge picnic area adorned with plenty of covered tables. There are also several rides including the famous train ride; a small train that rolls through the park and costs $3 to ride, accepting passengers every five minutes. Another attraction is their merry-go-round that is actually an antique which was imported from New York City and dates back to the 1920’s. Finally, they also have a decent restaurant and gift shop, so if you forgot any necessary supplies you can stock up in here.

There are also rows upon rows of ancient railroad cars that you can tour, and the guides have plenty of history to offer on them. Aside from all of that, there is a pond nearby which makes for a great place to spread a blanket and relax—to enjoy each others company and the decedent picnic that you have prepared.

While at this park enjoy looking at and touring the inside of some antique railcars that were used during the expansion of the West.

This is the largest park in the city of Scottsdale and one of the largest parks in the state. Known to many as the Greenbelt, which is a belt of greens, parks, washes and public golf courses that spans twenty miles in both directions, and is roughly half a mile wide. There are several great areas that decorate the Greenbelt for a picnic, but my favorite is Eldorado Park.

A lavish park with a very large body of water in the middle, that is filled with ducks, geese and is stocked with plenty of fish. You can find ample areas near the water to spread a blanket out and enjoy a romantic afternoon. Or, you can easily grab a covered table nearby and eat under the guise of the shade.

You will notice that you are not the only ones enjoying an afternoon picnic when here. Many couples and families head to this very popular park on the weekends to do just this. Perhaps the quiet and serenity is to blame. Or, perhaps it is just a great place to have a picnic; I choose to go with the latter!

Other Cool Picnic Spots in AZ:

Papago Park

455 N Galvin Pkwy., Phoenix, AZ 85008

The Hole in the Rock is one of the best known outdoor hiking and picnic retreats in the State of Arizona. It is also considered to be a natural equinox—a place where gravity and the natural physics of nature are somehow disregarded. When at the hole in the rock you can climb around its nifty and natural rock structure; the place makes for a great picnic spot. Don’t forget to climb up to the actual hole in the rock, a naturally formed hole in the precipice of this rock formation that creates a wind tunnel. It is really freaking cool and one-of-a-kind.

Encanto Park

W ENCANTO BLVD PHOENIX, AZ 85003

The very large and astute Encanto Park did not used to be such a romantic haven for wooing couples. Quite the contrary. Originally built in the 50’s by the city of Phoenix as a place to decorate the inside of the downtown portion of their city, this park fell to crime and lack of maintenance by the late 90’s greatly tarnishing its name and intention.

However the city finally had enough and really cracked down on it in the late 90’s. They got rid of the bums, the crime and litter. They cleaned up the entire area and revamped it; which took about five years. The end result was one of the safest and most beautiful parks in the state. A place to known to many as Enchanted Island.

Finding a great picnic spot at Enchanted Island is easy; there are just so many of them. You can choose to dine near the water by the docks, or you can choose from many of their covered eating areas. Where ever you decide to spread that blanket, you will be surrounded by beauty and nature.

South Mountain Park

South Mountain Park

10409 S. Central Ave., Phoenix, AZ 85042

South Mountain Park is Gigantic.

South Mountain Park is Gigantic.

The candor and massiveness of South Mountain greet you if you are heading down west in the valley for your picnic. This mountain is quite literally enormous, so make sure that you have your hiking boots or shoes ready for wearing. There are several very nice picnic areas that decorate the side of the mountain, and plenty of great hiking trails that lead off from them; should you decide that a walk is in order following your meal.

My favorite spot is near the top of the mountain, and yes you can drive all the way up to this awesome picnic spot. Several covered picnic areas are laden along the drive up the mountain, and you can pull off the main road and park at any one of them should you choose. Once you have found an area which suits you, simply park and claim the table.

The greatest part about having a picnic here is that you can enjoy some of the best views that the state has to offer. Imagine eating the perfect meal with your significant other while looking over vast stretches of a beautiful city. And, then holding hands as the sun plummets slowly behind the horizon in its crimson display of grandness.

Thanks for the information! I love railroad history and going on all of the different scenic routes. I recently went to http://scenicrailexcursions.com and found a lot of great railroads I haven’t visited yet, so I’ll certainly add this one to the list!

Thanks for the clues. If I ever get to sunny Arizona, I’ll check these sites out. Meanwhile, I have a guide to picnics in Seattle— but you might need to bring an umbrella.
