Ice Cream: Why scream for it when you can eat it?
Chicago's summer has had a slow start, but that hasn't stopped me from enjoying one of my favorite summertime treats. Not even lactose intolerance can stop me! I've highlighted some of Chicago's best ice cream joints in addition to some fun and random ice cream facts.
Sundae vs Sunday
I’m convinced that “Sundae” is just another way to make the English language more complicated. However, historians disagree (Oh they would.) Way back in the day the piety of the town didn’t like the way the soda fountain’s influence on Sunday. This led to an ordinance being passed prohibiting the sale of ice cream sodas on Sunday. Rebellious confectioners and drug store owners served ice cream with the syrup of your choice without the soda.
Of course the old folks still needed something to complain about. They objected the christening of a dish after the Sabbath. So the spelling of “sunday” was changed to “sundae.”
There’s a bit of an argument over who created the very first ice cream sundae. I’m rooting for Evanston :) If you’re really interested, you can read about the history of ice cream here
Original Rainbow Cone
9233 S Western Ave Chicago, IL 60620
Expect long lines, but happy taste buds. The “original rainbow cone” is composed of five flavors—chocolate, strawberry, pistachio and Palmer House (cherry flavored, with chunks of cherry and walnut) ice creams, along with orange sherbet—packed into a wedge atop your cone.
Don’t worry. There are sizes for the whole family!
How many scoops can you eat?
Scoops
608 W 31st Street, Chicago, IL
If you happen to find yourself at Scoops, I highly recommend the Strawberry Shortcake Explosion – Pound Cake, Vanilla Ice Cream, Strawberry Topping, 2 Strawberry Wafers and Whipped Cream – YUM!
Biggest Ice Cream Sundae
A sundae made by Palm Dairies LTD at Alberta, Canada on July 24 1988, had 20.27 tons (44,689 lbs, 8 oz.) of ice cream, 4.39 tons (9,688 lbs, 2 oz.) of syrup and 2.37 kg (537 lbs, 3 oz.) of topping!
I’m glad I don’t live closer to this Lakeview ice cream parlor because I’d go there often. I had a scoop of peanut butter chip ice cream and it was amazing! Locally inspired concoctions include Lakeview Barhopper (chocolate ice cream with Jack Daniel’s flavoring) and Signature Sunset (merlot ice cream and chocolate pieces). For other flavors and items, check out their menu

Kitchen Sink Sundae
Elm Farm Dairy in Ohio serves a Kitchen Sink: twenty-one scoops of ice cream, topping and whipped cream served in a real kitchen sink!
Celebrate Ice Cream Month!
Did you know that in addition to being National Hot Dog Month, July is also National Ice Cream Month?
Creative Ice Cream Flavor Day—July 1
National Strawberry Sundae Day—July 7
National Peach Ice Cream Day—July 17
National Ice Cream Day—July 18
National Vanilla Ice Cream Day—July 23
Cold Stone
4709 N. Lincoln Ave. Chicago, IL 60625
I’ve never been to Cold Stone when it wasn’t busy. They’re few and far between in Chicago, but they’re totally worth the drive. “Customers choose flavors like sweet cream, cake batter or banana, add mix-ins—ranging from candy bar chunks and Gummi bears to hot fudge and peanut butter—then servers mash it all together on a frozen slab of granite.”
Most Expensive Desserts
For a long time Golden Opulence held the title as the most expensive dessert. This sundae cost $1,000. Not long ago Serendipity 3 in New York raised the stakes by creating a $25,000 dessert. Those sundaes better come with a refund.
SuperSundae
Last week I discovered that my favorite hot dog Superdawg was on Twitter. I went there for lunch, met one of their co-Tweeters and was treated to a delicious Superdawg Sundae. Three big scoops of vanilla ice cream topped with my favorites! Yum!
Don’t feel like getting out of your car? Don’t worry! Superdawg is one of Chicago’s few drive-in eateries. Plus they have a really great menu, sure to have something everyone will love. Don’t fill up on hot dogs and burgers though – save room for dessert!

Gertie's Ice Cream
3685 South Archer Avenue Chicago, Il 60609
Warm up with some of Lindy’s famous chili and then cool off with Gertie’s delicious ice cream! I know, it’s weird that a chili and ice cream shop would be mixed together, but it’s been working for since 1974!
