Roller Coaster Season

I've never vomited on an amusement park ride. I have, however, vomited immediately after exiting an amusement park ride. One of my biggest fears is letting my stomach out during a loop-di-loop and instantly making 20 new enemies. If you can hold your lunch better than I can check out the best places to ride the rails near San Francisco.

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom

1001 Fairgrounds Dr, Vallejo, CA 94589

Possibly your best bet for the biggest number of coasters. From Roar to Kong to Medusa to Boomerang, you can spend all day here without getting bored.

Medusa - Six Flags

The clicking of the roller coaster sounds strangely like the Predator when he’s hunting.
On to Medusa though:
65 mph, 150 feet, back-to-back loops, barf-bags not included.

Roar - Six Flags

After the brief ‘hello’ from our brave cameraman you get a nice POV of Roar. This is a classic wooden coaster featuring a 10-story-high opening drop and 50 mph speeds. I’m personally all about the wooden coasters.

The newest solo-coaster in backwoods Montana.

Gilroy Gardens

3050 Hecker Pass Rd, Gilroy, CA 95020

While Gilroy Gardens won’t compare with the other big name parks around the area, it definitely gives it a shot. Plus where else can you pick up some famous Gilroy Garlic after a day on some rides?

Quicksilver Express - Gilroy Gardens

This mine coaster almost gives you the feeling of skiing through the trees. 600 hundred leafy trees line the tracks as you twist and turn.

Where to lose your lunch.

The Groper Coaster!

You must be at least 18 to ride this ride.

California's Great America

4701 Great America Pkwy, Santa Clara, CA 95054

The Bay Area’s other major contender for best roller coasters is Great America. With the old school Demon or the new school Survivor, coaster hoppers will get their fill.

Demon - Great America

I love the intimidating voice of the “Demon” as you begin one of Great America’s classics. I can’t help thinking back to the voice though as this ride slaps around the curves. That poor demon manning the microphone must be bored out of his mind. The pay must be amazing to keep him sitting in that booth and welcoming everyone to the coaster day-in and day-out.

Flight Deck - Great America

What used to be Top Gun is now Flight Deck, but it is still awesome. This coaster leaves your feet hanging in the hair through a 60-degree vertical loop, two 270-degree afterburn turns, a full-circle wingover, and a zero gravity roll. Feel free to call out for Goose at any time.

Not everyone needs an "actual" coaster.

The Coney Island of the West is a great place to bake in the sun. The Boardwalk has a lot of history running through its foundations (old bath houses anyone) and the fifth oldest coaster in the U.S. So step aboard (just like the 55 million people before you) and enjoy the Giant Dipper, funnel cakes, carnies, and bikinis.

Giant Dipper - Boardwalk

Featured in many many favorite movies and many many childhood dreams, the Giant Dipper is a staple at the Boardwalk. I like to reenact The Lost Boys here but I keep getting kicked out for hissing at strangers.

Lombard Street

1092 Lombard Street, San Francisco, CA

While not exactly a roller coaster on rails, you can get some nice whiplash in your car. Take the road as many times as you want for free and avoid all the lines and heat at the amusement parks.

Big Wheels - Lombard St

This is possibly the most awesome race of all races ever raced.
