Do you ever leave an action-packed movie wishing that you could kick ass like the stars on screen? I don't know about you, but sometimes I leave wishing I could hop into a real-life game of Mortal Kombat - of course I'd die since I'm not trained whatsoever in any form of combat. Now that you think I'm crazy, here's a guide with some of the best fight scenes from our favorite movies, plus a few kick-ass places around Chicago.

Ziyi Zhang vs. Michelle Yeoh in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is home to many incredibly fights. Perhaps the best is this four-and-a-half minute, gravity-defying, perfectly choreographed fight scene.

Flirty Girl Fitness

1325 W. Randolph Drive Chicago, IL 60607

If you’re tired of boring machines at the gym, check out Flirty Girl Fitness. They have an incredible list of classes including: belly dancing, chair striptease, doggie style yoga (ha!) and zumba.

Ash vs. Ash's Hand in Evil Dead II

Remember that movie Idle Hands with Devon Sawa? Yeah, this one is MUCH better! Some claim that it is Sam Raimi’s best work. (And with Bruce Campbell on board, how could it not?) Ash’s hand becomes possessed and what better way to take control of the situation than by cutting it off. The famous line, “Who’s laughing now?!” is yelled by Ash after doing so. Who’s laughing now? We are Bruce. Thank you.

V vs. The Government in V For Vendetta

“My turn.” “With the classic Lock Stock ethos “Guns for show, knives for a pro” in mind, V proceeds to slice and dice the totalitarian government goons like a kitchen chef gone mad.”

HERO Fitness

1941 N. Elston St., Chicago, IL 60642

HERO is a private training facility, but if you work out with one of the trainers, you get a discount on the group training sessions, which include kick-boxing, yoga, pilates, etc.

Mickey vs. Good Night Anderson in Snatch

You don’t have to understand what Brad Pitt is saying in this movie to enjoy it. There’s plenty of shirtless time for the ladies and many fights for the guys. Around 2:15 the fight scene gets really cool, then again around 3:50. Mickey, who is capable of taking someone down with one punch, is forced to restrain himself and stay down. Does he? Tis a mystery!

LA Boxing

8 East 9th Street Chicago, IL 60605

Not sure if boxing or kickboxing is right for you? LA Boxing lets you sign up for a free class.

John Preston vs. Thought Police in Equilibrium

Equilibrium is one of my favorite Christian Bale movies. Preston (Bale) is a man responsible for removing all art forms and expression. He gets pissed and decided to fight back using Gunkata’ a.k.a. hitting people with guns really fast – it’s a lot cooler than it sounds! The really good stuff doesn’t start until around 4:50.

Happy Gilmore vs. Bob Barker in Happy Gilmore

“The price is wrong, bitch!” Need I say more? (It is virtually impossible to find a decent clip of this on YouTube, so I apologize for the shortness and crappy quality of this clip.)

Daniel Larusso vs. Johnny Lawrence in The Karate Kid

I remember being so nervous for Daniel EVERY time I watched this as a kid, as if the ending would change and some how Daniel wouldn’t win. Fool.

All-Star Kung Fu

1511 W Fullerton Ave., Chicago, IL 60614

All-Star offers Kung Fu, Wushu, Tai Chi and self defenses classes for both kids and adults.

Fight Club

I was going to narrow it down to Tyler Durden vs. Tyler Durden, but 1) It’s impossible to find a clip to embed and 2) The entire movie was amazing. If you haven’t read or watched Fight Club, can I ask why? (Ironically Jared Leto is singing the song this clip is set to.)

Anchorman Fight

Channel 4 News vs. Channel 9 vs. Channel 2 vs. Public News vs. Spanish Language News. “Let’s dance dickweed!” Brick kills a guy with a trident, Frank Vitchard has his arm chopped off (“Aw man, I did NOT see that coming!”) and Wes Mantooth almost gets the drop on Burgundy.

Enso Yoga & Martial Arts

719 S State St. Chicago, IL 60605

Enso is kind of tucked away, but if you can find it, it’s worth it. The instructors really seem to know what they’re doing and they’re very encouraging. Downside: yoga is only offered once a week.

Optimus Prime vs. Megatron in Transformers: The Movie

I’m pretty sure the soundtrack made this fight what it is. After watching this, tune in and watch the other fight scene from the most recent Transformers movie. Which one is better? There’s no cheesy rock music, but I think it stands a chance.

King Leonidas vs. Persian Army in 300

As an anatomy fan it was great watching the slow-mo fight scenes. As a woman it was great watching every scene with a half naked Gerard Butler in it. The entire movie is basically a series of fight scenes all linked together by powerful music and minor plot interruptions. Regardless of the movie’s accuracy, you know everyone left theaters wishing they had a sword (and Butler’s abs.)

HiFi Personal Fitness

1030 W North Ave Chicago, IL 60622

At HiFi everyone works out with a trainer. This is a great way to corral the gym chaos, as each person is being monitored, guided and disciplined. Plus, free parking!

Jason Bourne vs. Desh in The Bourne Ultimatum

While Ultimatum wasn’t my favorite Bourne movie, this was definitely my favorite Bourne fight scene.

Slim Hiller vs. Mitch Hiller in Enough

I won’t lie, Enough was a tough movie to watch. I still get angry watching it, but the final fight scene makes up for all of the anxiety. Jennifer Lopez played a woman who was abused by her husband for years. She finally found strength/courage and really kicked ass. This movie made me want to take some self defense classes.

Self Defense Centers

2151 W Irving Park Road Chicago, IL 60618

SDC’s main focus is sparring events or competitions, they teach you specific defenses against specific attacks. I suggest grabbing a gal pal and heading to one of these classes. You’ll be happy you did.
