BEST DOCUMENTARIES EVERRR!
Though I am a huge fan of the chick flicks, I am also the first person to rush out and catch a documentary the minute it hits the theaters. Anything that's informative and open my mind, widen my perspective, present facts in a way I hadn't thought of them- is definitely something worth watching, in my mind. Here are some of my personal favs, what are yours??? I always want to expand my list on Netflix!
The Michael Moore Documentaries
Love him or hate him, he’s responsible for films that get people talking. Even if you aren’t a fan, I think it’s good to know what’s out there….the truth is, even if only 1 percent of what he was saying were true, that’s enough to get you thinking…..
You may consider moving to France after this one…
When Mike first started rocking the boat…..
Speaking of cars....
Have you checked out this one?? Both the birth AND death of the electric car.
Why were they all destroyed???
Watch and find out.
This will raise some questions...
We all remember those controversial photos that came out with the prisoners posing with bags over their heads- they were disgraceful. This movis is an examination of the prisoner abuse scandal involving U.S. soldiers and detainees at Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prison in the fall of 2003…
Gotta love The Rolling Stones!!!
OLD
I listen to Gimme Shelter in a whole new way now…
you better be prepared before sitting down for this one….
This will make you think TWICE about that Big Mac
after I saw this, never shopped there again. Ever. Even if the toasters ARE four dollars.
This may just piss you off.....
My Best Fiend (Mein liebster Feind)
The love/hate relationship between director Werner Herzog and actor Klaus Kinski. They were a great match on the screen, and even friends (at times, it seems), but the two were both such dominant men that there was a lot of anger and crazy thrown in the mix.

City of God
Phenomenal! Go rent it today.
An amazing story about a legendary songwriter and his consistent and gradual loss of his mental faculties.
The White Diamond: Werner Herzog
Beautiful documentary! Def my favorite! This and Grizzly man. That man was CRAZY! Werner is the man though. The man.
Wordplay
I had serious problems choosing between this and Spellbound. They’re both EXCELLENT and delightfully nerdy.
Dark Days
An amazing look into a world no one really knows about. This goes underneath NY to look at the cardboard cities the homeless have built in abandoned subway tunnels. Some even have electricity, heat, dog kennels…
Born into Brothels
This documentary is about children born into the Redlight District in Calcutta, they are given cameras and take pictures of the world around them in India. It’s INCREDIBLE to see what happens to them in the end and the journey they’re on….So inspiring.
You’ll be thankful that Obama the president elect, will soon be in office.
Extremely moving film about the tragic shootings at Columbine Highschool in Colorado.
Let's talk about the planet shall we:
Over the last few years with global warming becoming more and more of a concern on people’s brains, some incredible films about what is happening to our planet, the consequences of our actions and more importantly, what will happen if we don’t do anything about it.
Global WARNING is right….
The 11th Hour
You’ve got to love it when ridiculously famous and talented actors take the time to invest in a film that’s really important. Leonardo Dicaprio lends his sexiness and his concern for the planet and get’s everyone all amped up on saving the planet…
I didn't know I could become such a fan of The Dixie Chicks??
Remember when Natalie Maines spoke out against President Bush? Oh yeah, well country listeners weren’t too happy about that. This movie talks about the backlash from that one little comment and how the ladies were able to rise above, I always love rebel chicks.
Music Documentaries + John Lennon= LOVE
John Lennon= BAMF. This movie validates that.
This movie changed my life.....
…and it came BEFORE The Secret, if you were a fan of The Secret, you’ve barely scrapped the surface- check out this one.
My friend Lil’ C, the man with the crazy abs on the cover, is in this movie directed by David Lachapelle…the movie documents young adults living in dangerous parts of L.A. and where there love for movement came from- join a gang or dance…they chose dancing. Truly a great, great film.
I don't care if she's crazy....
this movie made me want to BE her.
On a more serious note...
this definitely isn’t the light viewing of Truth or Dare, but worthy of watching nonetheless.
VERY. VERY. SCARY.
in my opinion…
Don't Look Back
Just like Time Out said, D.A. Pennebaker’s Don’t Look Back is a seminal rock film and it made me fall in love with Bob Dylan. Serving as inspiration for other rock films for decades to come, including very obviously this year’s Patti Smith: Dream of Life and last year’s truly moving I’m Not There it’s not simply a “great documentary,” it’s a great film.
American Splendor
Innovation gets a lot of credit in my book and American Splendor is certainly one of the most innovative films in recent memory. Seamlessly blending documentary-style interviews with a traditional narrative, this film will make you forget all about how much you dislike looking at Paul Giamatti, because misanthropic cartoonist Harvey Pekar is the role he was born to play.
No other pimp documentary even comes close.
This is an interview that I actually conducted myself earlier this year with Daniel where he talks about his experiences in the mental ward and about how much he dislikes watching the documentary made about him.
The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters
You all HAVE to see this. I’m not a big video game person and I thought it was AWESOME.
The Bridge - Not for the faint of heart
This is the hardest movie I have ever watched. Eric Steel set out to make a documentary about the Golden Gate bridge. He setup cameras to film the bridge and ended up catching people jumping off instead. It turned into the story of why people choose this bridge to end their life. Getting through this movie took multiple days as I had to shut it off when it got too heavy. You’ll know if you want to continue with it after the first five minutes, but if you make it through it will resonate for a long time after.
This documentary is about the band Sigur Ros and their return to their homeland of Iceland to perform free concerts in small villages. Whether you are a fan of their music or not, this is a beautiful and inspiring film. The footage of the Icelandic landscapes alone makes the film worth viewing.
