Many often think that Rocky is Philly's iconic figure, but our real hero is Mr. Ben Franklin (although I prefer to refer to him as B. Frank. It has a certain Philly charm to it). Restaurants, streets, and even a bridge have been graced with his name. I mean, he did discover electricity and form the first public lending library, not to mention the fact that he was known for being an author, printer, political theorist, politician, scientist, etc. Needless to say, B. Frank had a mind that was one-of-a-kind and was always spouting fabulous words of wisdom. Here are a few of my favorite B. Frank quotes.

Short But Sweet

This is by far my favorite B. Frank quote. It’s short and sweet.

True Story: I was so moved by the quote when I saw it on the wall in the Ben Franklin museum, that I snapped a shot of it with my phone. There is truly nothing like coming across a quote that brings a smile to your face. What can I say, I’m a word nerd.

The Benjamin Franklin Bridge

You know you’re important when a bridge is named after you. I’m just hoping for a park bench! That would truly make my day.

Franklin Fountain

My favorite ice cream parlor in Philly is named after none other than B. Frank. The Franklin Fountain aims to serve an experience steeped in ideals, drizzled with drollery, and sprinkled with the forgotten flavors of the American past.

This old school themed spot looks like a blast from the past with ice cream memorabilia, malts and soda water. Their homemade ice cream is worth a daily trip (if your wallet and waist size can handle it) I anxiously wait for NJ blueberries to reach their peak in July, because that means fresh NJ blueberry milkshakes.

The woman who plays Betsy Ross and the man who plays Ben Franklin in Historic Philadelphia actually got married last year on the 4th of July!

The Franklin Institute honors the legacy of Benjamin Franklin, housing many of his personal belongings as well as a bevy of modern attractions devoted to the pursuit of scientific discovery. Beyond its many exhibits, which includes the innovative art and science area known as Sir Isaac's Loft, the museum contains the Fels Planetarium, the 3D Franklin Theater and the Tuttleman IMAX Theater. It sits in Philadelphia's Center City district on the southern tip of Fairmount Park, beside the Please Touch Museum.

Raise Your Glass

Every Philly bar must love this phrase! I’ve even seen pint glasses in the Philly Visitor Center with these perfectly brewed words etched on the glass. Drinking never sounded so smart!

B. Frank In Action

Forget transformers and barbies. I wish I had played with a B. Frank action figure. Barbie has Malibu and a great shoe collection, but she didn’t invent electricity.

Walk In Franklin's Footsteps

This white ghost structure marks the spot where B. Frank’s house used to stand.

Maybe if you stand inside the beams you’ll experience a clear state of mind that leads to your own wiser-than-thou quotes and major inventions.

Will The Real B. Frank Please Stand Up

Ralph Archibald (the man who looks like B. Frank) is the famous B. Frank impersonator. I can easily say that he is one of the most cheerful men who walks the streets of Philly. But wouldn’t you be if your job was impersonating the man who invented electricity.

I love that you call him B. Frank! We had a huge discussion in my grad school copywriting class about whether or not it is appropriate to call him “Ben” or if we should refer to him as “Benjamin.” I don’t think we ever came to a conclusion. So, B. Frank it is!

Okay, I laugh every time I read “B. Frank.” So why did his autobiography have to be one of the most boring reads ever? Maybe it was just b/c I was a book-hating 9th grader…
