Best of the Best - My Top 16 Fashion and Beauty Products
OK, can I just get girly here for a sec? Great. So, I have a huge DIY streak when it comes to beauty. Why should you care about my fashion and beauty must-haves? 1. I am picky as heck and have spent actual time comparing products and researching 2. I have lots of tricks I have picked up that are perfect for the girls out there who DON'T want to spend a lot of time on products, but still want to look damn good. This is a big deal for me to share, mkay? So read on, try some out, and let me know if anything improved your life!
WHY: This product is actually moss-based and works BETTER than any other mascara, natural or not, out there. Better than Lancome’s new vibrating one, better than my previous favorite, Guerlain’s 2, better then drugstore brands. Feels so rich and soft, doesn’t dry out and flake. Washes right off with soap and water, feels natural.
ADDED BONUS: Made from sustainable moss – hello! How cool is that. Although AVEDA’s products aren’t 100% natural, there is a deliberate effort to come as close as possible, and do so sustainably (ie, not wiping out a plant crop from a poor country while paying them peanuts for it).
Great staff that will spend a bit of time with you if you need.
If you are an AVEDA nut like I am, I hope you signed up for the rewards program – I earned enough points to send my parents to a spa on Vancouver Island. Yeah, really.

WHY: The perfect shoe for an active, edgy girl like you! 5 years of being a retail manager = a LOT of running around; I have also worn their shoes for my waitressing gigs. In other words, I have beat the heck out of them, and they hold up great. I discovered them while living in Canada, and not a lot of places carry them, so check out their website for current styles.
ADDED BONUS: People ALWAYS stop me to ask me about my shoes when I am wearing these. You’ll get the added satisfaction that comes with being the trend know-it-all.
3. OPI Ridge Filler
I don’t spend a lot of time on hair, nor a lot of time on makeup. One thing I do spend time on though and always have in tip-top condition are my nails – it’s all about the details, ladies.
Did I mention I haven’t gotten a mani/pedi since prom? I DIM (Do It Myself)! Why take $60-$100 out of your monthly budget when you can put on your favorite album and zen-out while pretty-ing yourself up?
WHY: The key to this is OPI’s ridgefiller. After clearing cuticle, cleaning, and shaping you put on a coat of this directly on your nails. It’s like putting down a thin layer of concrete that makes your manicure look smooth no matter how you slather on your polish afterwards.
This is a product that can turn anyone into a professional.
4. OPI polish
Now this one isn’t much of a secret, but if you’re going to DIY mani, you should have a few bottles of your favorite colors around.
WHY: OPI is user-friendly and lasts a long time in the bottle. At $7-$9 , you can occasionally stock up on favorite colors and still save $$.
They always have the latest colors at not too much of a mark-up.

5. Anise Day Serum - fresh cosmetics
I kind of wish I had never discovered this stuff, because it is AMAZING. It is also mucho buckos, coming in at $85/bottle – jesus christo! But before you freak out, read on.
WHY: It immediately brightens your complexion. Immediately. No joke. All day. It also plumps up your skin, so that if you wear makeup, it’ll go on smooth as silk. I have foregone wearing face makeup after using this because it does such a great job.
TRICK: Dude, who can spend $85 a pop? Maybe you can if you use 1/2 pump like I do every other day. A bottle lasts 8-10 months this way.
I would skip Sephora and head straight to the real store. The women who work here are so beautiful, knowledgeable, and sweet that it is worth the trip.
They are also generous with the samples so you can try it out before you spend the $$ to take it home!

6. Pureologoy AntiFade Shampoo & Conditioner
OK, another almost insanely expensive product. But it’s worth it.
WHY: Smells so good, it’s total therapy. Makes hair super soft. Makes color last forever.
TRICK: How many times a week do you wash your hair? I lecture about this every chance I get: why are you washing your hair so darn much??
3x weekly for hair prone to oilyness, and 2x for everyone else should be fine! This saves you $$ on product and saves you TIME – who out there wants to wash and blow dry their hair everyday?
The “cheaper” version of the nano version above, this is the stuff I use and this size bottle lasts me about a year.

I don’t need “nice” clothes all that often, but when I do, there’s only one place I go: REISS.
WHY: Look at this stuff! It’s gorgeous – just the right amount of modern + sex bomb + color. The perfect place to go for rehearsal dinners, weddings you’re not in, or a post-breakup shopping spree – it’s better than sitting in a corner here.
TRICK: Only shop the sale. A lot of the more edgier and more fun pieces end up at reduced prices, so why buy at full price?
WHY: Prairie Underground makes amazing pieces – think of it as cotton-couture. Everything I have of theirs is always the thing I find myself reaching for; my closet is basically secondhand store pieces, Prairie Underground, and a few Reiss dresses. The cuts are flattering, timely, comfortable, and easy to care for (being mostly cotton).
ADDED BONUS: Organic cotton is used. A large percentage of pesticides are used on cotton, that’s why buying organic saves your skin (the largest organ of absorbtion) and the ground from toxic stuff that has a habit of lingering.
TRICK: Don’t machine dry your cottons, or any of your clothes if you can help it. This isn’t some hippie thing – keeping clothes out of the extreme heat of the dryer actually preserves fabrics and keeps them looking new for a lot longer. Hanging dry or laying flat is the way to go.
As close to perfection as a retail store can be – it’s absolutely beautiful inside and smells amazing. I stop in weekly just to die over this store’s merchandising and its wares.
Carrying other amazing eco-brands besides Prairie Underground, bags, shoes, housewares, and accessories that are all sustainable and semi-local, the store sometimes makes me want to curl up and live there.

9. Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day Cleaning Products
WHY: The best natural-esque home cleaners, they smell good (better than Method) and work well (also better than Method, in my opinion). Harsh chemical cleaners are outdated.
10. Tweezerman Slant Tweezers
So there I am on a week-long trip to Hawaii without my tweezers. My good friend offered me hers and MY LIFE WAS CHANGED.
Seriously. I’m not one given to too much hyperbole.
WHY: If you are a beauty DIYer like myself and don’t have the luxury of someone else shaping your brows, the Tweezermans are pretty much a godsend. They’ll make your old tweezers feel like you were plucking with chopsticks. These are Karey Ann guaranteed.
WHY: They are good-looking (mostly knock-offs of Dooney&Burke, Coach, and Louis Vitton), durable, and pretty reasonably prices. Lots of pockets. Great size for carry-ons. For a week trip, I can use two of these and be good to go – no having to hit up baggage claim!
WHY: This is jewelry that gets noticed but is not clunky or overly trendy (read: you can wear it season after season). Her designs are unique and easy to wear.
ADDED BONUS: Made from recycled vintage materials like old leather and metals – wear it instead of sending it to t landfill!
WHY: Need everyday undies that don’t make you live a lie (lie being that thongs are comfortable), but also don’t make you feel about as desirable as Honeydew undies fill a gap: they make you feel cute and are also extremely comfortable and stay put. Falling into the trap of drab everyday undies is a shame – hip hip hooray for lacy, stretchy, comfy undies!

14. Jo Malone Perfumes
I’m not even going to tell you where to buy Jo Malone. This perfume line is so personal to me that if you want to check it out, you’re going to have to do the research on your own.
WHY: It’s that good.
15. "Personal" Scissors
There was a time when I would shell out $75, take some advil, and grin and bear the humiliation that is a regular bikini wax.
Times have changed for me, and this just seems unreasonable now. Though I know women who do their own waxes, my DIY streak doess not run this deep.
WHY: A razor and some “personal grooming scissors” are enough for a lady to be well kept – pick up a pair at your local drugstore.
WHY: BEST SOAP EVER!! And now she’s selling online, though it was always an excuse to throw the tent in the car and head down to Big Sur – yes, I would drive 2 hours and camp for the weekend in order to stock up on this soap. You lucky devils.
WHY: All natural, homemade, makes showering pure joy. Try the Cedar Lemon Farm Scrub or Tangerine Lavender. Yummy.
That’s the Best of the Best. Enjoy your girliness, and please comment – letting me know if you try anything suggested here and how it worked for you.
