The Best Albums of the 2000's
In about six months, the 2000s will be over. So let's look back at some of the decade's best albums.
Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
This is the album that took Wilco from alt-country to indie rock superstardom. A perfect marriage between avant-garde experimentation and catchy melodies.
Brian Wilson - Smile
For the longest time “Smile” was known as the greatest album never released. It was supposed to be the follow up to the Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds” in the mid-sixties, but Brian Wilson had a total meltdown so the project was abandoned. Nearly 40 years later, though, Wilson finally completed and released his masterpiece, and it was well worth the wait!
No Kids - Come Into My House
The best album no one’s ever heard of! The album is an ecclectic blend of piano pop (“Great Escape”), electronica (“Listen for It”), Timbaland-inspired beats (“The Beaches All Closed”), and even barbershop (“Four Freshmen…”). Gorgeous arrangements, soft vocals, and catchy melodies you can sing along to.
Feist-- The Reminder
I think this album is just amazing. I loved “Let it Die,” but “The Reminder” takes the cake!

Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Album #2 in Sufjan’s state series, “Illinois” includes tributes to Andrew Jackson, John Wayne Gacy, and Carl Sandburg.
Radiohead - Kid A
After the success of “OK Computer,” fans were eagerly awaiting a follow-up. But instead of making a carbon-copy, Thom Yorke and company surprised everyone with an album of mostly electronic music. Nevertheless, “Kid A” proved to be just as good, if not better, than “OK Computer.”
The Strokes - Is This It?
This album didn’t have the same cultural impact as Nirvana’s “Nevermind,” but like the Seattle trio, The Strokes killed off the boring nu-metal scene and issued in a new era of alternative rock.
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
Bombastic. Dark. Melodic. Apocalyptic. However you describe it, Arcade Fire’s second album is a masterpiece.
Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
Legend has it that singer/songwriter Justin Vernon wrote and recorded this album locked away in a remote Wisconsin cabin. The result is this beautiful and haunting record that’s sure to be a classic.
Kanye West - Late Registration
Okay, so Kanye is an egotistical schmuck. And this album isn’t without a few clunkers (“Celebration,” the skits). But you can’t deny that with his first two albums, Kanye did away with same old boring hip-hop cliches and made the genre interesting again.
Iron and Wine - The Shepherd's Dog
Beautiful album by Sam Beam and co. The closing track, “Flightless Bird, American Mouth,” was used for the Twilight movie.
