Bartending Dreams in The Big Apple

Doesn't everyone dream of artfully shooting liquor into shot glasses, mixing fancy cocktails, and pouring just enough head on a pint of beer? One of my myriad thoughts when contemplating life is, "Well, I could always go to bartending school." I think I have a romantic notion about finding happiness in a Cheers-environment, when really, I would go home everyday at 4am smelling like liquor and with fewer tips than I expected. And yet, I decided to take the plunge. Well, a dip: guest-bartending! Where they let crazy girls like me get behind the bar and pretend to know what to do next...

It all started when...

Actually, I don’t remember the first time the idea to dabble in bartending popped into my head. These things just happen! Spontaneously. But a trip to Montreal in college did spur me on. Hey, let’s go to Montreal!, I said to my friends as I planned a road trip and activities. Well, this one day there it RAINED for hours and we didn’t have umbrellas, so we ducked into a large bookstore and read coffee table books, one of which was all on mixed drinks in beers. Was it the glossy photos? The names? (gin fizz, amaretto sour, tequila sunrise). I don’t know, but I was sold!
It helped that the drinking age in Canada is 18 and we ordered martinis, Manhattans and something called Planter’s Punch at the casino bar. The ball began to roll…

Back to School!

I’m sure you could hone your skills outside of the “classroom” (school) and out in the real world (bar), but you can at least get your feet wet in bartending school and learn the basics along with everybody else. There are schedules to accommodate your own and hopefully you won’t be getting instructors akin to those at Drivers’ Ed or some of those Gotham writing workshops around town. Hopefully they are good bartenders who took a liking to teaching?

Bartending Schools

I’ve heard through the grapevine that this is the best one. AND they are the only drink-mixin’ school in Manhattan licensed by the NY State Education Department. That’s gotta mean something, right?!?

I freaked out a bit when I saw the word “test” splattered all over the site. You have to learn how to make 20 drinks (correctly I’m guessing!) in under 6 minutes. Oh. My. God.

ABC Bartending School

500 8th Ave, New York, NY 10018

Hmm, I know I want to learn the basics, but "ABC"s? I’m wary! According to Yelp, they don’t teach the best bartending classes and their job placement help is limited to pointing you in the direction of Craigslist. Um, yeah, thanks, I know how to use the internet. Pass?

Getting down to business…

Booking it all the way out to Staten Island for class doesn’t sound like my cup of…gin, but they too are licensed and don’t you want to be different? Everyone goes to bartending school in Manhattan! Plus, you’ll get to take the subway downtown, then ride the ferry everyday AND take a bus. Every. Single. Day. For like two weeks…

Out of all the half-assed bartending school sites, this one is the best. Don’t just a book by its cover, I know, but there’s something that rings a little more legit and official from the way the site content flows. Well, disregarding the typos and picture of a person holding and sniffing wads of money.

*Guest-Bartending*

Or what I like to call, “Pretend Bartending.” In fact, the name of our Facebook event is “_____and Alicia Pretend to be Bartenders.” I’ve mixed up cocktails at home, like my favorite gin & soda, pomegranate raspberry margaritas, and the fruity Century. But save for the first, all of my drink-mixing occurred huddled over a recipe or cookbook, involved careful measuring and pouring and taste-testing. NOT at all like it will be at a real bar. How will my diligent Susie homemaker self keep up?!?
I will report back on Friday regarding how it goes. In the mean time, the following bars in New York offer guest-bartending opportunities. Meaning, you don’t have to have ANY bartending or even drink-mixing experience going into it. AND, you get to keep tips!

How To Shake a Cocktail

I was so concerned with knowing drink recipes that I forgot that a lot of bartending is about technique. I can’t take my sweet ole’ time and I should try to avoid tons of spillies (on the counter, patrons and myself). So, I turned to YouTube for guidance…

Fat Annies Truck Stop

131 W 33rd St, New York, NY 10001

I just made up a rule to live by: don’t guest-bartend anywhere with a slightly unattractive-sounding name AND with something called “Fried Cheese Curds” on the menu. Ewwwww.On the plus side (ba da BAH! pun), guest-bartending is going to mean a lot of beer can and bottle opening, so having a go at it won’t be much harder than sitting on your couch at home.

I can’t ever look at “tots” without thinking of Napoleon Dynamite: “give me some of your tots.”

How Eyeball Ounces and Other Measuring Tips

Count 1-2-3-4 and that equals an ounce?! I never knew that!

Crowe's Nest

Bar None

98 3rd Ave Frnt A, New York, NY 10003

Not the most reputable place for guest bartending, but pouring you will be sooooo good at pouring bud lite for coeds. And that is a skill worth working on if you want to pull an Old School.

Rewind

137 Essex St, New York, NY 10002

This isn’t just any guest-bartending stint, and chances are, I will never have the honor of making whiskey sour here. Owned by two ladies in the fashion biz, guest slots are for fellow fashion mag and PR firm peeps! And you can totally ask them “Who are you wearing?” because they WILL have an answer. It’s like the red carpet!

My Favorite Bar Joke

Actually, it’s the only bar joke I know. Furthermore, it’s the only joke that I half-butcher instead of completely tanking. I am a horrible joke teller. Horrible! I think about the punch line about halfway through, then start laughing, then forget where I was in the joke. Then it’s a really sad attempt at figuring out what to do next before I throw up my hands and say, “I can’t tell jokes!” This one I stumbled upon online in college, and I used to tell it (by reading it off the computer…and I STILL messed it up!) to my good friend.
A panda walks into a bar, sits down and orders a sandwich. He eats the sandwich, pulls out a gun and shoots the waiter dead.
As the panda gets up to leave, the bartender yells, “Hey! What do you think you’re doing?”
The panda yells back at the bartender, “Hey man, I’m a PANDA! Look it up!”
The bartender takes out his dictionary (wait, why is that there? Okay, n/m) and sees the following definition for panda:
“A tree dwelling marsupial of Asian origin, characterized by distinct black and white coloring. Eats shoots and leaves.”

I survived!

I have now officially bartended in New York City! I did punch $1000 instead of $10.00 into the cash register within the first ten minutes. Hahahahaha. Whoops!

While you guys guest bartend, I make the big bucks at amateur night! Totally kidding, no really… and even if I did, I would wear a wig, add a beauty mark, and black out a tooth… just saying, if I DID!

My roommates used to guest bartend all the time. It was great for me, free drinks! :)
