Sweet Escapes

Share on StumbleUpon Add to del.icio.us Share on Facebook

As an actor in LA, I'm not allowed to eat. But occasionally, I'll break the rule and stuff my face with some delectable calorie ridden horror fest. These are a list of my favorite treats that will probably become part of your favorite treats.

Ralphs

5601 WILSHIRE BLVD LOS ANGELES, CA 90036

I never would have thought that the best cookies I’ve tasted would come from the supermarket, but they do. Lofthouse frosted sugar cookies come in bright colors like yellow and pink frosting and make your stomach ache in delight. I ate a whole box of them in 2 days. Seriously. So soft, so sweet, so yummy.
I think you can find them at any grocery store, but I know for sure they are at Albertsons too. Whenever anyone sees these cookies, their mouths start to water, their eyes tear up, and their stomachs growl. It’s a kinetic reaction, friends. Get in on it.

Cupcakes and Co

900 W MAGNOLIA BLVD BURBANK, CA 91506

So, this place got kinda negative reviews on Yelp, which sucks, because it’s really really good.
I used to be addicted to sweets. Hell, I still munch on sugar packets as appetizers. (I prefer sugar in the raw).
Basically, this is the cupcake for you if you want something less sweet. The frostings are so frickin creamy, you feel like you could eat 47 of them and not feel guilty. The cake part is also incredibly light and fluffy.
The mango one even has bits of real fruit in it. The lady behind the counter is incredible sweet and so helpful. The way she talks about these cupcakes, you’d think she was dating them.

Also, she tells us that each cupcake has its own individual batter, which places like Sprinkles lacks.

My favorite is the Mango one. The Coconut one is okay too. Not a huge fan of Red Velvet, though. I think for Red Velvets, you want it really really sweet, like Sprinkles, Toast, or Doughboys.

This is definitely the place to go for a subtle sweetness, when you don’t want to feel uber guilty, only slightly regretful. Also, don’t forget the Italian Orangina/Limegina for $1. Sooo yummy.

Red Mango

5115 WILSHIRE BLVD LOS ANGELES, CA 90036

If you’ve had Pinkberry, you need to give Red Mango a try. Supposedly, it’s healthier, but I don’t buy that any of this crap is good for you. Red Mango is the original expensive trendy yogurt, and it’s smoother and creamier than it’s pink counterpart. It tastes way more like soft serve and has less tang. I always get mine plain, and it does me just right. I never really understood the appeal behind toppings.

I only get the plain flavor at any of these yogurt joints. Also, because Red Mango is creamier, I find that I don’t crave it as much, because its a teensy bit heavier than Pinkberry.

Portos Bakery

10301 MAGNOLIA BLVD BURBANK, CA 91505

If you haven’t been to Portos yet, you still have a chance at the good life, if you go immediately following reading this review.
Despite all the hardships I have suffered in my life: college rejections, break-ups, botched auditions, losing my underwear on the Sunset Strip that one time, Portos has nursed me back to health. Everything is amazing.
This Cuban Bakery is packed at all times of the day, so you best be prepared to wait. Staples are: meat pies, potato balls, grilled chicken sandwich, and for your sweet tooth: Cheese Rolls.

Seriously, once you eat one, you will be addicted for life. Perfect amount of crispy, sweet, delicious as hell.
