Wondering what's going on this weekend in preparation for St. Paddy's? Here's everything that Denver offers for this fine holiday.

St. Patrick's Day - 2008

The ethnic celebration where it doesn’t matter if you’re actually a member of said ethnic group.  Ah yes, St. Patrick’s.

Well, you’ve got your kilt and your Shillelagh ready, but where do you go and what do you do?

Never fear gentle reader, your resident expert drinker will give you some ideas about what’s up this weekend for the ever-popular St. Patrick’s Day in Denver, CO.

Even Spiderman is Irish on St. Patrick’s.

Did you Know? - Trivia #1

It’s St. Paddy’s, not St. Patty’s. Paddy is short for Patrick (or Padraig), and Patty is a woman’s name.

A bit o' Irish

The Feckin’ Search Engine of Ireland.

First Event - The PARADE!!!!

Hell yeah, the parade!  Come see Shriners and the Sons of Erin alongside pipe bands and even keep your eyes open for this writer marching with a local media group. I’ll give you a hint – it’s a Spanish radio station!

Yeah, I’ll probably be the only Irish person in that group!

Denver St. Patrick's Day Parade

This is the official site for the parade downtown this weekend.
It starts at 10 am at the corner of Blake & 27th and goes south to 17th, then back up to Coors Field Parking.

Did you Know? - Trivia #2

A leprechaun is really a shoemaker who’s rich but mean.

Second Event - Serpent Festival

Legend has it that St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland. To
celebrate, you can take your kids to the Denver Zoo and
see the many varieties of snakes the Zoo has.
This year the Zoo even has an Irish tapir all the way from Dublin.

Leprechaun Sighting

Mobile, Alabama. “It’s either a leprechaun or a crackhead.”

Third Event - Botanical Gardens

The Botanical Gardens are FREE this Monday. FREE! FREE! FREE! Yeah, that’s right!

[Insert standard comment about kissing, under the kilt, and Blarney Stone here.]

Did you Know? Trivia #3

The first St. Patrick’s day parade in the US was held in Boston in 1737.

Feck! Drink!

Probably the closest thing to ambrosia.

Besides scotch. Mmmm, scotch.

FOURTH AND BEST EVENT - Drink!

Ok, I won’t lie to you. Really there’s only three things that I love to do on St. Patrick’s.

Wear a kilt.
Watch the parade.
Drink.

These things make St. Patrick’s day a huge holiday for me and those close to me. I mean, it sure beats dealing with your in-laws during Christmas, amirite?

So here’s some of my favourite Irish pubs in Denver to hit after the parade insanity.

Fado Irish Pub

1735 19th St Ste 150, Denver, CO 80202

Fado’s is always insane on St. Patrick’s day. This Friday, they’ll be sponsoring the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and volunteers will shave their heads to raise money for childhood cancer. Festivities start at the craic (get it?) of dawn at 6:30 a.m.

Celtic Tavern

1801 BLAKE ST DENVER, CO 80202

The Celtic is also insane. They have skirted the smoking laws of Denver, so expect some smoke in the eyes.
The other thing to keep in mind about this place is they DON’T HAVE GUINNESS.

Let me reiterate that:

THEY DON’T HAVE GUINNESS.

‘nuff said.

This is Guinness. It’s Irish. Green beer is NOT irish. It’s Bud Light that makes you pee green.

Irish Snug Restaurant and Bar

1201 E Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80218

The Snug is awesome – one of my favs for food and drink. No Ulster Fry here, but some great food nonetheless. Saturday they’ll even have some kid-friendly stuff like a magic show and balloon making.

Did you Know? - Trivia #4

The name “whiskey” comes from the Gaelic “uisce beatha,” which means “water of life.” And I ain’t dead yet.

Awesome, awesome place. This is one of my favs for Irish food and drink. This year they even have a kid’s afternoon with a magic show and balloon making on Saturday. No Ulster Fry here, but good food nonetheless. Oh, and if you can, get a snug, they’re great for quiet times with your significant other.

Nallen's Irish Pub

1429 Market St, Denver, CO 80202

I love Nallen’s. This place may be a little small, but it’s just the right size for some pints with your mates. Check it out early if you can, cause it’s packed for Paddy’s.
Slainte!

Did you Know? - Trivia #6

There’s nothing under the kilt.

Except what God graced you with.
