Astrodome: The Eighth Wonder of the World
Astrodome: Home of the Houston Oilers
The Houston Astrodome opened in 1965 and was the first domed stadium in sports.
Dubbed the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” the Astrodome is over 18 stories tall and covers over 9½ acres. The dome itself is 710ft. in diameter and the ceiling is 208 ft. above the playing field, which also happens to be 25ft below street level.
Mickey Mantle hit the first home run in the Astrodome on April 9, 1965.
