Must-have iPhone apps for students
I've already put together a list of must-have applications for any iPhone owner, but depending on your age, interests or job you might have different needs when it comes to your apps. This guide focuses on helpful applications for students. This is only a handful of the many available apps. They should all be compatible with both the iPhone and iPod Touch.
myHomework - Free
myHomework is so simple to use. There is no excuse to forget when assignments are due. It’s a great app that allows you to keep track of your homework, classes, projects and tests. The design resembles a notebook separated by sticky notes.
You can enter your class schedule and use it to differ between homework assignments. myHomework will also notify you when you have late and upcoming assignments by numbering them on your application icon – much like text messages or voicemails.
Late assignments get marked in red and assignments coming up soon are marked in orange. Everything else is blue so you can easily distinguish between priority tasks and non-priority tasks.
iBlueSky - $7.99
iBlueSky is a brainstorming tool, ideal for capturing, summarizing and developing ideas and information on the go.
So many times I find myself with a great idea, but no where to record it. With iBlueSky you can capture, cut, copy and paste ideas and topics, as well as email yourself (or others) the finished product.
Remote - Free
With Remote you can control the music on your computer or Apple TV from your iPod touch or iPhone. Play, pause, skip, shuffle. See your songs, playlists, and album art.
It’s great for lazy people who don’t want to get up to change songs or for incredibly nerdy people (like myself) who believe that the capability to control something with my iPhone is amazing.
Graphing Calculator - $.99
I’m not a big fan of math, but should I ever develop a desire to study it, I bet a graphing calculator would come in handy. A real one can be pretty expensive, so why not give your iPhone a try?
With the iPhone’s graphing calculator app you can use the following functions: log, log10, ln, exp, sin, cos, tan, asin, acos, atan, sinh, cosh, tanh, degrees to radians, radians to degrees, absolute value, square root. You can also take a screen shot, and e-mail the graph to yourself.
Another helpful app for students is the periodic table. It comes with a color key and details about each of the elements.
Netter's Anatomy Flash Cards - $39.99
Netter’s is probably the most expensive iPhone app available right now. If not the most, it’s one of them. But I keep going back to them. I consider purchasing them at least once a month. As an anatomy student I believe these would come in handy often. I’d much rather carry around my iPhone instead of a box of flash cards.
These flash cards are extremely detailed, colorful and easy to use. The hardest part is justifying spending $40.
Bento - $4.99
Bento allows you to store databases of your life. Use their templates to store recipes, keep a diet log, inventory your home, or organize your class schedule.
This app also syncs flawlessly with its Mac counterpart over a wifi network. If you own Bento for the Mac, you can simply enter your info there and then sync it to your iPhone or iPod Touch to bring with you.
Local Concerts - Free
This would especially come in handy if you went away for school and aren’t sure of the local hangouts where awesome bands play.
Translate API for many languages including Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Spanish and Vietnamese.
Had I stuck with my French class, I have a feeling this app would have come in handy. I imagine this app would be pretty beneficial while traveling as well.
Brain Toot (Lite) - Free
I’ve mentioned Brain Toot before, but I thought I should remind everyone that it’s a great way to keep your brain active, but in a fun way.
Brain Toot (Lite) includes four brain training games to give you a mental exercise. They include memory, math, visual and thinking skills.
If you enjoy this one, check out the full version. It costs $.99 and includes 16 brain training games.
gFlash+ (free)
“With gFlash+ you can learn anything from math to chemistry or take a minute to relax and enjoy some trivia; anywhere and anytime.”
You can create flashcards and share them with friends using any two column Google Spreadsheet.
Drunk Dial - Free
Drunk Dial is very similar to iDrink in the fact that they both have hundreds of recipes at your fingertips. Of course I’m not suggesting that you focus your energy on drinking, but we all need a night off every once in a while.
Plus, you never know when someone is going to say, “I wonder what’s in such-and-such drink.” and you’ll be able to answer in a matter of a few clicks!
Evernote - Free
I know I mentioned this in the past, but it’s too awesome to not remind you. Evernote lets you remember anything that happens in your life. This is great for me because I have the memory of a 90-year-old.
You can put everything from notes, ideas to snapshots and recordings into Evernote and it will instantly synchronize from the iPhone to the web to your desktop! Exciting!
Evernote for iPhone is part of the Evernote service, which includes downloadable versions for Mac & Windows.
Bejeweled - $2.99
Bejeweled is my guilty pleasure. It’s a fun way to give my mind a break during study hours. It’s also a great way to make that commute on a train seem like less of a bore.
Very few brain cells are required!
Recorder - $.99
I love this. I just discovered it while researching this guide and I’m so excited about it! With the Recorder you can record memos, discussions, interviews, and ideas on your iPhone. Use it as a voice recorder or a sound recorder. Record for seconds or hours. This will come in handy while preparing for presentations and speeches and it will complement iBlueSky. If you’re looking for a free version, I recommend QuickVoice.
This is my first guide about iPhone apps, the must-haves that any iPhone owner should install. If you have anything to add, please let me know!
Browse through all of the applications. If you see something that should be on this list, let me know!
