The Bay Area Rapid Transit system can take you to a lot of great places. These guides will spotlight some of the most fantastic places along the track. Let's start with Powell St., shall we? Shopping, shows, museums and food, there's a lot going on at this stop. Everything I'll list here is within walking distance of the Powell St. BART Station.
The “Plan your trip” feature is a life saver. Tell them where you’re leaving from and where you’re going, then what time you would like to be there, and the site will tell you the trains that will put you in the spot at the approximately right time.
Your first stop on this magical journey. The Bart Station spits you out underneath this shopping behemoth. You don’t need to cut through here, but there are a lot of great shops that you don’t frequently see in malls, as well as an Art of Shaving that has a barber on staff to provide hot lather shaves. Yay!

A great place to see some smaller shows. It’s not as flashy as the Curran but you can catch great shows at decent prices. I saw a smaller touring company of Rent here and had a fantastic time. It’s a bit of a jaunt from the station to the theater, and you do pass through a…less than fantastic part of town, so be cautious if you’re going to a later show.

As a kid I was disappointed by the lack of Batman or the Hulk hanging from the wall, but as I’ve grown older I’ve really come to appreciate the history on display here. Focusing more on newspaper cartoons than comic books, this museum highlights the ways that the comics mirror the zeitgeist. Very cool.

The Shaking Man
This statue, found between Yerba Buena Gardens and the Metreon trips me out every time I see him. If you look closely, you’ll see he has way too many fingers and feet. You can’t see it in this picture, but his face is also duplicated. He looks like he’s vibrating, like Golden Age Flash.
The always tasty Mel’s is a great spot to stop if you don’t feel like dropping a ton of cash at the food court at the Metreon. Be warned, everyone else has this same idea, especially during big convention draws.

If you’ve got kids with you, this is a great stop. It’s an interactive art and technology museum where your older kids can play and explore and, god forbid, learn. There is also a bowling alley, carousel and ice skating rink for your little ones who steadfastly refuse to allow knowledge into their young minds.

This is where the big shows come. Phantom ran here, Le Mis, etc. etc. They’ll have A Chorus Line in July. If you’re a fan of early Simpsons, it’s worth seeing the show, if only to get the joke from one of the halloween episodes.

Curran Theater
It looks trashy and neon, but it’s super classy on the inside.
San Francisco Museum of Modern Art
151 3rd St. San Francisco, CA 94103
A fantastic modern art museum in the heart of the city. They have some remarkable permanent pieces, but their temporary shows are incredible. I’ve been there to see Yoko Ono’s experimental work and Alice in Wonderland author Lewis Carol’s creepy pictures of little girls. Keep an eye on their website and go check out something that looks interesting to you.
A beautiful place to relax and watch the city crawl around you. The ideal time to go is during the week, when it’s less touristy and you can just sit down on the lawn and people watch. Spend a little bit of time at the MLK Jr. Fountain/Walkway. It’s worth the trip.

The place to be for the big San Francisco events. This is where MacWorld takes place. This is where Wondercon takes place. This is where a bunch of boring stuff takes place as well, I’m sure. If you don’t want to deal with the fact that every garage in a twenty mile radius fills up for the big gatherings, BART will put you right over here. No parking, no problem.

I’ve spoken at great length about the Metreon in the past, so I’ll just quickly recap: Movie theater (with imax!), restaurants, Sony Store.

Walk of Fame
It’s hard to tell from this picture, but the black titles are stars on the “Video Game Walk of Fame”, honoring luminaries in the production of video games, as well as famous characters like Sonic or Mario. The fact that Ms. Pacman has been denied is an outright travesty, and proof that Sony is pandering to the Liberal Ghost Media who want to see her accomplishments banished.
