Anchorage Dining Guide

Great food, excellent beer and drinks, and given the quality, the prices are not just inexpensive, they are downright cheap. You can even choose to watch a movie in the theater while eating or drinking or take a seat in the restaurant instead. What’s not to like?

Another Anchorage classic which looks and feels like something out of a Mickey Spillane novel. Steaks are the order of the day, though there are plenty of other choices and I’m pretty sure you can order blue cheese on everything. Consistently voted the top steak joint in town.

An Anchorage classic for well over 50 years. The best fried chicken in town, tasty handmade burgers, the milkshakes are hard to beat and very friendly service. A classic American diner where it is hard to find a time when at least one or two police cars are not outside and if it is good enough for the men and women in blue on a daily basis…

The best pizza in town with a ton of varieties and excellent beer made right on the premises.

This is actually the address of the Sagaya City Market, which is not only a great little grocery store featuring Asian groceries along with terrific seafood and produce, but they also have a lunch buffet that is tasty and a good value for the money as are the other prepared options both here and at the actual Sagaya Midtown Market at 3700 Old Seward Highway.

Routinely voted as having the best Chinese food in Anchorage.

A very popular eatery featuring seafood and steak. The lunch menu features some less spendy items and the place is not quite as crowded then as well. Make reservations for dinner.

Hands-down the best breakfast in town and well worth the wait if you go on a weekend for breakfast. They are open for lunch as well with a wide variety of food that will please most every palate including vegetarian.

Located in a strip mall on the corner of International Airport Road and Arctic Blvd., this is one of Anchorage’s best restaurants. They want you to take your time and do not push you out the door in order to turn the table and the food is fabulous. The menu is largely Italian, though some Greek influence remains from the original owners. Starters run $7-10 and most entrees are north of $20, but if you are in the mood for a fine dining experience, well worth the cost.

In a mini-mall right across Benson from the Sears’/Carrs mall. Absolutely wonderful bakery that produces a terrific variety of breads and other baked good (including giant cinnamon rolls). Everything they make is excellent, and you cannot go wrong gong in when they have just pulled bread out of the ovens and serve you a hefty sample with butter. They now also sell sandwiches, you go on in and they make your sandwich to order. Be prepared, these are big sandwiches and a good value.

It’s tasty, it’s cheap, it has a drive-thru – very good, no frills, cost-conscious Mexican fare.

Good food and an excellent value for your money, especially for lunch.

A very popular restaurant in downtown Anchorage with an on-premises micro-brewery. Gets very busy on summer evenings most any day of the week.

The name says it all. Humpy’s has been voted best bar previously, most notably for the staggering number of beers on tap at any given time, but they also have a varied menu of excellent food at very reasonable prices. This is one of those Anchorage institutions when it is not uncommon to see folks wearing tuxedos, climbing gear or Carharrts (the worked-in variety) at any given time. Humpy’s also features good live music every evening.

Certainly the gold standard by which other Anchorage fine dining establishments are measured. Located in a small former house in downtown Anchorage, the menu features a wide array of choices. One of the highlights is the Caesar salad they make for you right at your table. It’s not cheap, but it is not snooty either. Given the variety of items on the menu, it’s not a bad place to just forget the entree, split some appetizers and a couple of bottles off the excellent winelist and cap it off with one of their terrific desserts.

Good food and an excellent value for your money, especially for lunch.

A classic destination for tourists complete with plenty of Alaskan-kitsch decor. This is kind of a traditional place to take visitors and is best known for breakfast.

Kind of off the beaten path, if you are looking for some good food at a reasonable price, this is a place worth finding. Offerings center on sandwiches, though there are salads and other offerings to be had. Tommy’s has generated a very loyal clientele and have been voted to have the best burger in town several times.

International food store with excellent produce and seafood, but also featuring multiple eating options including an asian-themed buffet, and fresh sushi they are making in the store.
