Favorite Albums/Live Acts of 2008

OK, so it might be premature. But as I write, they are hanging holiday lights out on College Ave and the damn non-chain coffee shop on the corner is playing Christmas carols. Such is life. So what were your favourite albums of the year? What can't you stop listening to? What caused you to go all screaming-crying-wide-eyed-with-hand-over-mouth - and don't forget to tell us why!

ALBUM: Bonnie "Prince" Billy "Lie Down in the Light"

Widget_akprpizkjbd6v7br2dnjbd

Doesn’t he just look like a prince? Well, anyway, this became my summer album. I love his whimsical lyrics and have made my vocalist boyfriend sing the duet “You Want That Picture” with me endless times.

ALBUMS: Panda Bear "Person Pitch"

This was a favorite album of last year, in case you asked. What? This is my guide and I didn’t ask? Well, nevermind then

ALBUM: Nick Cave & Warren Ellis

The length of this movie was only made bearable by the soundtrack. Soft, sad, sweet, subtle… every song is shiver worthy.

ALBUM: Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago

Backstory – Justin Vernon moved to a remote cabin in the woods of Northwestern Wisconsin at the onset of winter. He chopped wood, built fires, lived simply and wrote music. This album is what came out. It is largely the same production value as when he first recorded it in the cabin.

ALBUM: SIlver Jews "Look out Mountain, Look out Sea"

Dave Berman returned with what is one of his best albums ever and also possibly his last. He’s one of the best songwriters of the last 20 years and his live show was also one of the best shows that I saw this year.

He actually created a short one off side in project in the past with Will Oldham (aka: Bonnie Prince Billy) of which they produced a limited run EP.

LIVE ACTS: Beirut, Herbst Theater San Francisco

They looked just like the picture, and sounded better. Some music snob tried to piss on my parade and tell me that their sound and image are farcical and hollow.

I think this music snob was actually an unfeeling evil robot bent on destroying the human race.

Yes, I cried during the short but heart-striking “After the Curtain”, but so would you!

Herbst Theater is located inside the War Memorial Building. It was such a small, great venue. I have never seen another show here.

NKOTB

OK, my friend Leslie went to see NKOTB – “New Kids on the Block”, for those of you who are too young or too old to have experienced the phenomenon that was Jordan, Jonathan, Joey, Danny, and Donnie. This is her and her friends at the show in Las Vegas. NKOTB was also my first concert in 5th grade. I still love you, Jordan!

Radiohead

Widget_cbangq5zzk7qumdcr1emf5

Since this album was officially released on January 1, 2008, I’m sticking it on the list. I saw Radiohead play at Outside Lands in San Francisco over the summer, and while the event was POORLY organized (overcrowded, bad sound), the band still managed to be awesome. If not for the venue problems this would have been the best show ever!

I am in love with Bon Iver. LOVE. Also, NKOTB was my first concert too!! I was in 2nd grade and will never forget that day at recess my friend invited me to go with her. I freaked out. Wow.

If I had to describe it… I would say it was headbanging boogie, Princess!?
