The Boston Guide to Everything Trader Joe's

Since I've moved to Boston, I've become absolutely obsessed with Trader Joe's. In fact, I sometimes doubt whether or not I could live without the store. If you live in Boston, you should consider yourself extremely lucky that there are so many Trader Joe's in the area.

Here's just a small sampling of what has me so obsessed with Trader Joe's.

Trader Joe's is the Greatest Place on Earth

It’s really hard NOT to love Trader Joe’s. Like really, really hard. And being in Boston, we are so incredibly lucky to have multiple Trader Joe’s locations just waiting for us to enter and buy their delicious goodies.

It seems like no matter how much I buy at Trader Joe’s, I only never really spend more than $35. $35 of groceries that, if I bought them in a traditional grocery store, I would have spent at least $60.

I am one of Trader Joe’s biggest advocates and am here to show you exactly what you need to buy to fall in love with it as much as I have.

Boston Atmosphere

The Trader Joe’s on Boylston Street is painted in true Boston tradition.

Huge Cereal Selection

Widget_dod6dleojg7l7x7y8-seyh

You know how cereals are so expensive these days? Well, Trader Joe’s has a ton of less expensive cereals that are just as good and even better than what you pay more for in a traditional grocery store.

My personal favorites are Joe’s O’s with berries and High-Fiber Fruit and Nut Multigrain Cereal.

Also, the Heart Healthy Blueberry Oatmeal is absolutely fabulous.

Serious Snacking

These white cheddar corn puffs are the most wonderful snack. About ten times better than Cheetos and a serving only has about 5 grams of fat.

And the HUGE bag is only $1.49

Trader Joe’s pita chips are another snack you don’t have to feel guilty about. Their regular sea salt pita chips are fabulous, but even better are the cinnamon sugar pita chips.

Also somewhat more nutritious than other snacks (60% less fat than pita chips!) and just as delicious.

I didn’t know I like soy until I ate a bag of these in one sitting. OMG so good. They’re light and crunchy soy chips covered with white cheddar.

And theyre soo much healthier than chips or regular snacks. No lie, I could live off these things.

Make-Your-Own Guacamole Kit

Widget_buvyfbbcjjkyyzxpzwscmm

What a fabulous idea! A guacamole kit! This little kit includes everything you need to whip up some delicious guacamole, including 2 avocados, a tomato, jalapenos, onion, garlic, and lime.

And at only $2.99 for the kit, this is a way better bargain than buying all the ingredients separately.

Ellen at Trader Joe's

Hilarious Trader Joe’s experience.

I don’t know whether to be really ridiculously happy about this book or really angry that I didn’t think to write it first. Because I could have. I could have done a fabulous job too, considering most of my meals are based around what I can buy at Trader Joe’s.

Anyway, this book is my dream come true and I need to get my hands on it immediately.

Other Things at Trader Joe's I could Live Off Of

The list is endless, but here are my other Trader Joe’s faves:

  • Hummus- I go through a huge, party-size hummus every few days. It’s perfect to dip fresh veggies in and TJ’s always has tons of awesome varieties.
  • Peanut Butter- All natural and super fresh tasting, they have tons of varieties and it’s super cheap too.
  • High Fiber Bread- TJ’s has an awesome bread selection and I especially love their high fiber bread, which has an obnoxious amount of fiber per slice (6 grams!) and still manages to taste fabulous.
  • Frozen Fish- TJ’s frozen fish is AMAZING. It’s flash frozen so it’s super fresh; they always have a huge selection; and it’s SO much cheaper than the fish you’ll find anywhere else. I especially love the tuna steaks and salmon roullades.
  • Dark Chocolate Covered Pretzels and Peanut Butter Filled Pretzels- I’m not even a big fan of pretzels, but throw some dark chocolate on them and throw some peanut butter in and helloooo, guilty pleasure.

Wine! Inexpensive Wine!

Widget_choznstsrk4zqbk1er9il8

Oh, where do I even begin?? First of all, Trader Joe’s has an amazing wine and beer section. More than you have ever seen in a non-liquor store, not to mention, where else in Massachusetts can you buys liquor along with your groceries? Seriously amazing.

But even more amazing is the fact that they carry Charles Shaw wine, otherwise known as 3 buck chuck. If you’re in Cali, it’s 2 buck chuck, but unfortunately we have to pay some shipping charges here in Boston.

When you’re a starving grad. student or a starving graduate trying to pay off loans, this wine could be your life saver. I mean, $2?? That’s unheard of! And it’s not bad either.

Fresh Fruit

I swear I’m not a lazy person, but Trader Joe’s sliced apples just make me so happy.

You can get macs, granny smith, or organics all pre-sliced in a nice big bag. They make a perfect on-the-go snack and are also delicious with a little peanut butter on top. Of course I could use an apple corer, but why bother when I can easily get the most perfect sliced apples all ready for me?

Widget_apkxqyoyjogzkuoewrql3p

19 cents for a banana? Enough said. They always have a great selection, some yellow and ready to be eaten and some green and ready to ripen.

Dairy Free Ice Cream

Widget_dalhn5bn9pezle-rub0qw7

Now, I am in no way a vegan or even vegetarian. I love meat. And I could live off dairy. But Trader Joe’s is teaching me all about soy and how yummy it is. Who would have thought I’d ever enjoy dairy free ice cream??

But I do! In fact, I love it. This stuff tastes just like ice cream, but maybe even creamier. It is amazing if you blend it with some orange juice and make a smoothie (vodka optional).

Highly-Entertaining Advertising

I’d probably go to Trader Joe’s even if I hated the food just for the signage.

Their super creative and artistic advertising is awesome and always entertaining. And there’s usually some humor thrown in too.

This awesome man is one of the artists behind the signs at Trader Joe’s!
