The Sunset district isn't equal to Strip in our Sister to the South... Even if it seems like Suburbia, the fog-blanketed oceanside of SF has some great treasures.
Costello's 4 Deuces
My favorite Tavern on the foggy side of the city, it takes a bit to get out there, being at 36th (?) and Taraval. I often will go to Ocean Beach on the N-Judah, walk down the beach to Taraval (about 10 blocks), and walk up to 36th for a warmer after the chill of the ocean breezes. When I discovered it, it was the “Olde Rogue,” and I competed (horribly) in my first ever darts tournament… They still have dart tournaments, and often BBQ hot dogs and stuff, and I really feel like a tourist when I go in, being one of the few not to have an Irish brogue. Tommy and his boys are very hospitable, and are often hanging around. Danny and the girls tending bar are as real as you can get.

The Palace of Fine Arts is a stunning, Greco-Roman structure built in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific Exposition. Featuring a lovely Roman rotunda and curved colonnades, the structure has appeared in numerous films, such as Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, and offers a lovely, park-like setting for picnickers and sightseers alike. Home to a 1000-seat performing arts theater, which plays host to an array of concerts, film events, lectures and comedy shows, the site also features the Exploratorium, a hands-on, state-of-the-art science and natural history museum with a rotating array of exhibits. The Palace of Fine Arts is located in the city's Marina District, just minutes from Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
The Coastal Route
Many people overlook the little trail that goes under the Golden Gate Bridge as this is such a landmark that it dominates everything else in San Francisco… but this little trailhead can lead you oln some fabulous adventures. It will take you to Ocean Beach if You follow it long enouhg, but be sure not to get Sidetracked by Baker Beach (cover your eyes, kids) China Beach, The Presidio, Palace of Fine Arts, or the USS San Francisco Memorial. This can be a day-trip, there are so many great things to see!
This is where my kid will be born next month. The last night we are there, we will get a candle-lit dinner… fitting for the Fire of My Soul. My favorite part of the tour was when Sunny tried to pick a fight with Sheryl, the nurse tourguide. She’s tough!!!

A warm, tavernish restaurant, with a sitting area and big-screen tv to watch games; the food is pretty good too… great beverage selection, and when the fire is going in the huge hearth, it’s a very cozy place to melt off the fog.

Overlooking the Ocean and Sutro baths, this legendary restaurant is one of the noshier places in San Francisco, but has a history that makes the experience worth the bill.
