It's no secret that I loved "(500) Days of Summer"-- I've sort of been talking about it nonstop since I saw it. Part of the reason I liked it so much was that it made Los Angeles (which isn't the prettiest of cities,) seem, dare I say it, picturesque. So here's the skinny on the movie's silent star (that would be the city of Los Angeles).

(500) Days in Downtown Los Angeles

If the sun could shine 500 days a year in Los Angeles, it would.

"(500) Days of Summer" Trailer

BEWARE: This will spoil some of the best parts of the movie.

The "(500) Days of Summer" Dance Sequence

This has rekindled my love for Hall & Oats.

A writer should not misspell Hall & Oates. An editor can not.

Civic Center Mall

Between the Los Angeles County Court House and the Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration, Los Angeles, CA

The Civic Center Mall is where Tom actually performs his “morning after” dance number. The fountain that makes a prominent appearance is the Arthur J. Will Memorial Fountain.

Redwood Bar & Grill

316 W 2nd St Ste 202, Los Angeles, CA 90012

The Redwood where the office karaoke scene takes place. It’s a “pirate bar,” but since there are no parrots, eye patches, or peg legs to speak of here, I am thus inclined to refer to it as “nautical-themed” bar.

Do they even have karaoke night at Redwood?

You know I don’t think they do, and I was going to look it up and then I got sidetracked (read: lazy).

Tom and Summer hanging out at the so-called “pirate bar.”

Broadway Bar

830 S Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90014

Broadway Bar is where Tom gets into an altercation when a smarmy suit tries to hit on hit on his lady (who later tells him that she is not fact “his lady”).

“There Goes the Fear” — Doves

Quelqu’un qui M’a Dit — Carla Bruni

“You Make My Dreams” — Hall & Oats

“Mushaboom” — Feist

“Hero” — Regina Spektor

“Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want” — The Smiths

Ikea Burbank

600 N San Fernando Blvd, Burbank, CA 91502

The infamous and ridiculously cute date scene takes place in the Burbank Ikea.

I loved those scenes! It reminds me of myself. Of course I don’t have a beautiful man to frolick along side me. Sad.

I actually just went to this Ikea and I was looking around for a cute guy who was also shopping solo. Sadly, it was all couples…

Le sigh. Maybe next time?

“Darling, I don’t know how to tell you this, but there’s a Chinese family in our bathroom.”

Million Dollar Theater

307 S Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90013

This is where Tom and Summer do what they seem to do best: go to the movies. Oh, and this is also where Summer has an “episode” after seeing “The Graduate.”

That’s awesome!

Union Station

800 N Alameda St, Los Angeles, CA 90012

Union Station is where Tom and Summer get on a train to go to a wedding in “Santa Barbara” (the scene was actually shot just south of LA).

I think Union Station would actually be a really cool place to get married. It would combine my love of public transit with my love of L.A. With an open bar.

I’ve know people that have gotten married there. Sadly, I wasn’t invited…

Old Bank Dvd

400 S Main St, Los Angeles, CA 90013

Old Bank DVD is where Tom tries to cheer up a less-than-chipper Summer when he finds a Ringo Starr album. Sadly, he does not succeed.

I sort of love/hate the fact that Tom’s shirt quotes Joy Division’s “Love Will Tear Us Apart.”

Fine Arts Building

811 W. 7th St, Los Angeles, CA

Tom waxes poetic about his love of architecture (and the Fine Arts Building) to Summer.

by lem  09/14/2009

Fine Arts houses the ornate lobby for Angelina’s “business” in Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Eastern Columbia Building

849 S. Broadway, Los Angeles, CA

Another historic building that makes a cameo in the movie.

Bradbury Building

304 S Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90013

This is the cool, Art Deco building where Tom goes on an interview for a job in architecture.

Eastern Columbia is Art Deco—stepping up like Bullock’s Wilshire & Wiltern Theater. Bradbury is Art Nouveau—blockier—with a central skylit atrium laced with Art Nouveau ironwork.

Angels Knoll

356 S Olive St, Los Angeles, CA 90013

Angels Knoll is where Tom’s park bench (his brooding locale of choice,) is located.
