Community The Football Lover's Guide To New York

Share on StumbleUpon Add to del.icio.us Share on Facebook

Forget that both of New York's football teams play in Jersey--this is a football town! But unlike many other cities, NYC is a melting pot of football fans and they show their fidelity in team jerseys on the streets, in sports bars and at home in front of the HD TV. As you can probably guess, I am one of them. My loyalty lies a state or so over, but I've been known to kick over the occasional trash can out of game-loss anger and drown my sorrows/celebrate my joy in too many pitchers of beer.

Turn On That Telly!

If you’re a poor starving, but football-loving _ like me (okay, I’m not actually starving), you can’t afford that blessed NFL Sunday Ticket package. Although it would be nice to stay at home on those winter days and watch the game, it’s New York and we are all about having any excuse to leave the house and go sit in a bar. Especially at 1pm. Where do you go? Favorite sports bars or alternative viewing locales?

200 5th

200 5th Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217

200 5th is the happy medium between nice bar with wooden counter and rowdy sports bar. You kind of like the level of rowdiness…maybe b/c it’s in Brooklyn? And not full of NYU undergrads? Sunday game time brunch is pretty sweet too.

Blondies

I have to be in the right mood for Blondies, which means I need to miraculously transform myself into a 21-year old frat boy with a tolerance of 27 beers, minimum. But the wings, yum!

...in a Jets uniform! That’s right, New York snatched him up.

How old am I? Old enough to have seen Joe Namath play for the Jets at Shea Stadium.

The Turnpike Rivalry

The Eagles-Giants rivalry always struck me as something of an anomaly. You’re talking about two teams with blue-collar roots always trying to destroy one another. After all, in the end: we all hate The Dallas Cowboys. That said, I can’t wait to watch the Birds stomp the Giants this season! Eli’s got his Super Bowl ring – whatever. I just wanna see him get humiliated again by Philly’s defense at Giants Stadium.
