Confessions of a 21st Century Nerd
So lately I've been thinking about nerds and geeks. Yesterday's computer nerds are today's hot dot com millionaires, one of the geekiest franchises (Star Trek) is the number one movie in America, Oprah is a fixture on Twitter, and Stephen Colbert has become a sex symbol. Now that nerdom seems to have gone mainstream, what makes a modern-day nerd? Or rather, what makes YOU a nerd?
I Have Lots of Internet Friends
It’s true; I heart my Internet friends. I even met one of my very best friends the Internet! I even kind of met my boyfriend through Internet-related activities (I swear we met in person before we found each other’s Internet presences!). But seriously, I heart the Internet because some of the very best people are on it!!

New York Magazine weighs in.
I Think Ira Glass is Sexy
See above.
I Watch Masterpiece Theatre
I don’t really tell people this, but I’d rather watch Charles Dickens adaptations than The Office.
Matthew Goode
Goode is the host of Masterpiece Contemporary (Laura Linney hosts Masterpiece Classic). If Matthew Goode isn’t a pretty compelling reason to tune in to public television I don’t know what is.
This is the latest series on Masterpiece Theatre’s Mystery! series. Even though Kenneth Branagh has put on a few extra pounds I think he still looks pretty hot.
Where you can watch episodes online in virtual anonymity.
I Read The Wall Street Journal
I don’t work in finance and I don’t really understand the whole credit default swap thing, but I still love reading The WSJ. Also, something I don’t usually tell people.
Here’s an analogy for you. The NYT is to presentable spouse as The WSJ is to ugly-looking mistress you don’t want anyone to know about.
I'm a Big "Says You!" Fan
This public radio quiz show is the epitome of word play nerdiness. Oh, and did I forget to say that I’ve been to a live taping?
I Own and Read Books...
I used to notice on the old MTV dating show Room Raiders that peoples rooms never had a book in sight unless it was on how to get rich quick. This was apparently never a deal breaker. This is a nerdy train of thought.
Balderdash Is My Favorite Game EVER
And sometimes, I just play it with a dictionary. Oh, yeah.
I Bring Up Science in Everyday Conversation
I don’t know why, but I always happen to bring up random science topics in conversation. The other day I got into a whole conversation with someone about centrifugal force. Ummm… yeah.
Area.com - is the coolest site
I accidentally came upon the site, Area.com and I loved it. I passed it to other geeks I knew.
Try it out – so so neat. They need to add more areas though.
I Love Planet Earth
I love this show so much I watch the reruns. Who knew Ibeks and caves could be so fascinating?
This trailer totally gives me goosebumps.
Everything you wanted to know about the mating habits of elephants. And more.
I Enjoy Classical Music
But I draw the line at opera.
