Confessions of a 21st Century Nerd

So lately I've been thinking about nerds and geeks. Yesterday's computer nerds are today's hot dot com millionaires, one of the geekiest franchises (Star Trek) is the number one movie in America, Oprah is a fixture on Twitter, and Stephen Colbert has become a sex symbol. Now that nerdom seems to have gone mainstream, what makes a modern-day nerd? Or rather, what makes YOU a nerd?

I Have Lots of Internet Friends

Widget_bkdf59irro952acugro4if

It’s true; I heart my Internet friends. I even met one of my very best friends the Internet! I even kind of met my boyfriend through Internet-related activities (I swear we met in person before we found each other’s Internet presences!). But seriously, I heart the Internet because some of the very best people are on it!!

Facebook friends are WAY better than real friends anyway.

Friends that only talk to me in small snippets and only when I decide to check are totally awesome!

I follow politics mostly online

I Think Ira Glass is Sexy

omg. LOVE him!!! His voice is amazingly sexy too!

I know!!! Smart, cute, and funny. It doesn’t get better than that!

I don’t love the sound of this voice, I was actually surprised when I first saw a picture of him— I didn’t think he’d be that cute!

I Watch Masterpiece Theatre

Widget_crza-mozdm0pajltzp6dn1

I don’t really tell people this, but I’d rather watch Charles Dickens adaptations than The Office.

Matthew Goode

Widget_cdtqgxvuvdh6dhjtars7nm

Goode is the host of Masterpiece Contemporary (Laura Linney hosts Masterpiece Classic). If Matthew Goode isn’t a pretty compelling reason to tune in to public television I don’t know what is.

Wallander

This is the latest series on Masterpiece Theatre’s Mystery! series. Even though Kenneth Branagh has put on a few extra pounds I think he still looks pretty hot.

I Read The Wall Street Journal

Widget_co3327tivilpmphxch0l74

I don’t work in finance and I don’t really understand the whole credit default swap thing, but I still love reading The WSJ. Also, something I don’t usually tell people.

I'm a Big "Says You!" Fan

Widget_bcfznsunjkcz9yy0bjczfw

This public radio quiz show is the epitome of word play nerdiness. Oh, and did I forget to say that I’ve been to a live taping?

I Own and Read Books...

Widget_bwrspcskvh8ohzaiukvms6

I used to notice on the old MTV dating show Room Raiders that peoples rooms never had a book in sight unless it was on how to get rich quick. This was apparently never a deal breaker. This is a nerdy train of thought.

Haha. Somehow I’m not surprised that none of those people had books on their shelves…

Ahhh you’re sooo right!! I have books EVERYWHERE in my room. And spilling off my bookshelves!

There was a show where a guy gave a quiz because he had to have a ‘smart’ girl – the girl he chose didn’t know who the VP of USA.

Balderdash Is My Favorite Game EVER

And sometimes, I just play it with a dictionary. Oh, yeah.

I can’t believe I forgot board games! I’ve been known to stay in on a Saturday night and play Apples to Apples.

Yeah, you don’t need the game, just a dictionary and friends you trust not to cheat. I call it “Fictionary.”

Clearly we need to have a Guidespot Balderdash meet-up since nobody else will play it with me!!

I Bring Up Science in Everyday Conversation

Widget_be9amzr4zjubvaqz33z2dv

I don’t know why, but I always happen to bring up random science topics in conversation. The other day I got into a whole conversation with someone about centrifugal force. Ummm… yeah.

I love the photo used here. It’s something I’d say. If I didn’t already know I was a nerd, I’d be surprised.

It’s actually a t-shirt! You should totally get it!!

I just might!

Area.com - is the coolest site

Widget_dcadqbwe1ipjbs2rqkxgon

I accidentally came upon the site, Area.com and I loved it. I passed it to other geeks I knew.

Try it out – so so neat. They need to add more areas though.

How else are you going to learn about cave-dwelling animals?

613871958

Perhaps Matthew Good has his own “giant tree” just for you.

Planet Earth

This trailer totally gives me goosebumps.

I Enjoy Classical Music

Widget_cm_pd9syfhrzcdgjgmotq-

But I draw the line at opera.
