Goal: Prepare for the St. George Marathon, October 6, 2007
Saturday, August 11:
Woke at 4:30, ate 1/2 banana and a couple handfuls of trail mix, drank a couple cups of water and maybe 12 oz of Power Aid then met at the “True Church”. Eight of us car pooled 20 miles up Highway 18 to the entrance to Brookside and started running about 5:30. The morning was cool and felt good after a hot and sometimes muggy July.
We planted water and Gatorade at 4 spots and, at the top of Snow Canyon, about mile 13, I also had a Payday candy bar and ate about half of it. After we passed Snow Canyon we got out of the shadow of the mountians and into the sun and it turned hot.
Finished running about 9, total time about 3:26 but that included stops for drinks and to water the trees (we usually walked while we waited for someone).
By elapsed time our average pace was just over 10 minute miles but, by the GPS, we tracked a few sub 8 minute miles and a bunch in the 8 and 9 minute range.
I felt good for the entire run.
We stopped at Great Harvest Bread for a drink and a slice of fresh bread.
Saturday, August 18: In Pleasant Grove for a wedding, up late visiting so went to bed around 1 am. Up at 8:45, glass of water and couble handfulls of Chex mix and out the door at 9, ran for about an hour, approx. 6 miles, lots of hills, light mist falling, felt ok.
Sunday, August 19: Rest day
Monday, August 20:
Up at 5:10, handful of grapes, handful of trail mix, water, out the door by 5:25, ran about six miles, fairly slow, felt ok.
Tuesday, August 21:
UP at 5:05, drank OJ & had a couple handfuls of trail mix, Bruce picked me up at 5:20, met Keli, Jana and Brenda at the Man O War trail head at 5:30, ran 6 miles, did a little speed work, much cooler this am, around 72 f, felt great.
Saturday, August 25:
Up at 4:15, water, banana & couple handfulls of trail mix, out the door at 4:30, drove to Marathon fininsh line at Vernon Worthen Park to meet the others, car pooled 20 miles up the course to just north of Veyo, dropped water at 5 locations with trail mix at the second water stop. Again, completed just over 20 miles in 3 1/2 hours. Felt good most of the way but ran out of gas in the last mile & had to push it in.
Monday, August 27:
Up at 5, water & trail mix, out the door at 5:20. Fairly cool but muggy with the remnants of Huricane Dean. As we ran the rain picked up, which was fine, but then we got into a lightning and thunder show like I haven’t seen for quite a while. We cut the run a little short & I gave Debbie a ride home. On the radio I heard that there had already been 4 lightning caused fires in Washington county. I also heard that it was the rainiest day we have had since January 2005 with 1/2 inch at the airport (some areas got more). Nothing like living in a desert… Ran about 8 miles, felt a little stiff and sore from Saturday.
Sunday, August 26: Rest Day
Tuesday, August 28:
Up at 5:05, water, trail mix and about 1/2 tomato with salt and pepper. Bruce picked me up at 5:20 to go to the Man O War trail head to meat Jana and Keli. Jana texted that she wasn’t coming because her kids were up most of the night. Keli was late but met us on the road. Ran 6 miles, felt ok.
Saturday, September 1:
Up at 4:30, water 1/2 banana, trial mix, Bruce picked me up at 4:45, met the others at the finish line at 5, car pooled 17 miles up “the course” (Highway 18). Started to sprinkle a little on the way up, picked up a little when we started running then after a few miles it was coming down in buckets for about 4 miles, let up again at about the Snow Canyon turn off. Not a good day, nausea, diarrhea (fortunately I made it to the toilets at Chucka Walla), back ached, knees ached, toes ached, dizzy…All in all not one of my best days running.
I have a theory as to why: 1. I didn’t eat well yesterday. I had a late, small lunch then a couple of bowls of cereal for dinner. 2. I ate too much “movie pop corn” at the movie.
I actually felt pretty good starting out and all the way thru the rain and even part way down past the Snow Canyon turn off before it hit me. I think I just ran out of fuel and my body stressed as I tried to keep pushing it. I finished the 17 miles but at a run/walk.
Sunday, September 2: Rest Day
Monday, September 3:
Up at 5:40, trail mix & water, out the door at 5:55 for regular Monday run, just a little later because of Labor Day, about 9 miles, met Debbie and Jana on the road, felt pretty good.
Saturday, September 8:
Up at 4:30 for the last long run before the marathon. Water & boiled potatoes, met the others at the finish line at 5. Drove up the course 23 miles (the turn off to Baker Reservoir). Normally I would do the last long run three weeks out but I’ll be gone next Saturday so had to do it today. Felt pretty good on the run, started feeling it about mile 19. At mile 20 we had a water drop & Bruce was there (he only ran 13) so I stopped at 20 and took his car to the finish line (he finished the last 3 with the others). I had to take my daughter, Rachel, to SLC to check out apartments as she is moving there in Nov. So, my longest run for this marathon will be 20 but I’ve done that several times so I should be ok.
Sunday, September 9: Rest Day
Monday, September 10:
Up at 5, water & boiled potatoes, out the door by about 5:15 for normal Monday Run, about 9 miles – felt a little heavy.
Tuesday, September 11:

Sunday, September 16:
Rest day
Monday, September 17:

Up at 4:45 (Jana wanted to start early), potato, gatorade, water, picked up Bruce at 5:05, drove to Man O War trail head to meet others. Ran 6+ miles, did some speed work, felt good. 63 degrees this morning! Looks like we survived another St. George summer…
Saturday, September 22:
Up at 5, water, oj, potato and trail mix. Met at the “true church” at 5:30 to run the Snow Canyon Loop, 17 miles. This will be the last long run before the marathon. Legs felt like lead for the first several miles but felt good after that. Pushed hard going up Snow Canyon and kept up a good pace down SR 18. Sprinkled a little going up SC then rained steadily down SR 18, all the way back to the church.

Sunday, August 12: Rest day
Monday, August 13:
Up at 5 am, drank some OJ, had a couple handfuls of trail mix and out the door at 5:15 for my regular Monday run (about 9 miles). Legs were a little tight after Saturday, slow run, hot (about 80 f.) and muggy, felt ok but not great. Saw remnants of the Persied Meteor shower.
Tuesday, August 14:
Up at 5:05, ate trail mix & drank water, Bruce picked me up at 5:20, met Jana and Brenda at the Man O War trail head at 5:30, ran six miles at a pretty good pace, probably in the 9 minute mile range. Cooler this am, felt ok.
Wednesday, August 15:
Up at 4:25, 1/2 banana, handful of trial mix, glass of water, out the door at 4:40 to pick up Bruce, house dark so drove to the Market to meet the rest to car pool over to Snow Canyon for our regular Wednesday Run. Cooler, slight breeze, just getting light as we turned around at the top to come down, good run, 9 miles.
Thursday, August 16:
Up at 5:25, 1/2 banana, water, out the door at 5:40, met Bruce at the corner & ran what is usually our Tuesday route, about 5 miles. Legs felt heavy for the first few miles but ok after that.
Friday, August 17: Rest day
Wednesday, August 22: Up at 4:30, handful of grapes and trail mix & water, Bruce picked me up at 4:50 for our regular Wednesday Run (Snow Canyon, 9 miles). Body kind of achy, headache, almost like I’m coming down with something.
Thursday, August 23, 2007:
Up at 5:30, water and a few handfuls of popcorn left over from last night, out the door at 5:45, met Bruce on the corner & ran our normal “Tuesday” route, about 5 miles. Felt ok.
Friday, August 24, 2007: Rest day
Snow Canyon is a great place to run
Wednesday, August 29:
Up at 4:25, water, trail mix & a small tomato with salt and pepper, picked Bruce up at 4:45 & drove to the Market to meet the others. Car pooled to Snow Canyon for our regular Wednesday Morning Run, 9 miles. Felt good going up, finished strong at the top and my legs felt pretty good on the way down. The nearly full moon hanging over the red sandstone cliffs on the west of the canyon made for a spectacular run.
Thursday, August 30:
Up at 5:30, water, trail mix, tomato, out the door by 5:45, met Bruce & Debbie on the road, ran about 5 miles, felt a little heavy.
Friday, August 31: Rest day
This is the original smiley face, located on Red Cliff Drive in St. George. Like most ancient rock art it’s not quite as polished as current versions…
Tuesday, September 4:
Up at 5:05, water & trail mix, picked Bruce up at 5:15, drove to Man O War Trail Head, (this is becoming our new Tuesday Run) met Jana, Rochelle & Keli, ran 6 miles, felt pretty good.
Wednesday, September 5:
Up at 4:30, water & small dish of boiled potatoes. (I have a friend who thinks potatoes are an excellent carb source before a run so I thought I’d try.) Bruce picked me up for regular Wednesday run in Snow Canyon. Felt good, strong all the way up, finished strong at the top, no queasiness, which is a little unusual, in spite of the fact that I pushed very hard. I wonder if the potatoes made any difference. I’ll try them again. Felt good on the way back down. In the dark again for most of the run. Near the bottom on the way back we passed a walker. Just after we passed we heard an “umph”. We looked back and she had fallen on her face, cut lip, scraped nose. We helped her up & made sure she was ok, walked with her to the turn off to her house. Ran 9 miles.
Thursday, September 6:
Up at 5, water, boiled potatoes, out the door to pick up Bruce at 5:15, met Keli at the Man O War trail head 5:30. Felt a little heavy this morning. Ran 6 miles.
Friday, September 7: Rest day.
Wednesday, Sept. 12:
Up at 4:25, trail mix, potato and water, picked up Bruce at 4:50 to meet the others to car pool to Snow Canyon for our regular Wednesday run (9 miles). Was a little sluggish (headache) to start but felt good and finished strong at the top, almost sprinting the last couple of blocks. Could this be the elusive “runners high” I hear about but experience only infrequently? It’s dark again now for most of the run. With no moon this morning the stars were bright, the Milky Way washed across the sky and the Big Dipper hidden below the northern horizon when we started but eventaully becoming visible, pointing to the North Star where we could make out the dim stars of the Little Dipper. To the east Venus, the brightest object in the sky, peeked intermitently out from breaks in the cliffs. I’m becoming a believer in potatoes as a pre-run snack. Again, no nausea inspite of pushing very hard going up…
Thursday, September 13:
Up at 5, water, potato, Bruce picked me up at 5:20, met the others at the Man O War trail head for 6 mile run. Felt a little heavy at first but ok after a few miles. Did a little speed work, running out ahead of the group then back. I’m experimenting with doing a little anaroebic work in each run to see how I feel afterwords.
Friday September 14: Rest day
Wednesday, September 19:
Up at 4:30, potato, gatorade, trail mix, Bruce picked me up at 4:50 for our regular Snow Canyon Wednesday run, 9 miles. Felt good again, finished strong at the top with no nausea and felt strong going back down.
Thursday, September 20:
Up at 5:05, water, trail mix, picked up
Bruce at 5:20, met others at Man O War trail head at 5:30 for 6 + mile run. Did several stretches of speed work, running ahead then back to the group. Felt good.
Friday, September 21: Rest day
Tuesday, September 25:
Up at 5:05, granola bar, water, Bruce picked me up at 5:20, drove to Man O War trail head for 6 mile run, felt ok.
Wednesday September 26:
Up at 4:25, water, trail mix (no potatoes), picked up Bruce at 4:45 for regular Wednesday morning run in Snow Canyon, 9 miles. Felt ok but not great going up, had to back off a the top (could it be the lack of potatoes?) & felt ok on the way down. Full moon, hanging low in the eastern sky was shining on the western red rock cliff faces on the way up. On the way down the moon had dropped below the eastern cliffs.
Thursday, September 27:
Up at 5:30, water, granola bar, out the door 5:45 for 5 mile run. Felt ok.
Friday, September 28: Rest day
Thursday, October 4:
Up at 5, water, oatmeal cookie, out the door at 5:15 to pick up Bruce, drove to Becky’s house for what used to be our normal Thursday run until she moved to SLC. She was back down to run the marathon. Ran 6 miles. Had body aches when I woke up. Wife and daughter both had strep in the last week or so so hope I’m not getting it. Felt better after the run. This is the last run before the marathon on Saturday. I think I’m ready but I’ll see for sure on Sat.
Friday, October 5: Rest Day
Average miles for last 8 weeks: 43, a little lower than I wanted beause of the two Saturdays out of town. I think that’s how you determine if you are a “real” runner, if you run when on vacation…
Strategy for marathon: Did a little protein loading on Sat, Sun and Mon then started heavy on carbs, having potatoes prepared different ways for each evening meal this week. Plan to have boiled potatoes to take with me Saturday morning before the marathon. I feel like I’ve prepared well. I’m hoping to break 4 hours. Best time so far, in 7 marathons, 4:02.
