Margate is a city in Broward County, Florida and considered a suburb of Fort Lauderdale while also making up part of the South Florida metropolitan area. The city was named for its founder, Jack Marquese, and its location as a gateway to western Broward County. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 53,909. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 55,152 .
