Sometimes the holidays can be a little painful (family+ having to buy gifts+more family), so it can be really good idea to laugh it off. Every year UCB has a pretty good selection of holiday comedic fare. A couple years ago I went to the All Jew Revue, which wasn’t hilarious, but it was significantly funnier than any jokes you’d hear around the holiday dinner table (unless the cast of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” happens to be part of your family).
I love this place, and I recommend coming here for a show (all of which are cheaper than a hamburger,) but the theater is SMALL and people LOVE UCB, so expect pretty long lines for shows here. You can avoid the stress of “will we or won’t we get in” by reserving your tix ahead of time online, but you’ll still have to wait in line to get in.
This improv theatre came before the Comedy Central show of the same name. They play host to a wide range of comedy shows from local and out of town sketch troupes to their ever popular (and oh so affordable) Comedy Death Ray. Just sign up for their email list and when you see a CDR line up that you like, RSVP as soon as possible. Then you’ll get to spend a measly $5 to see comedy talent like Sarah SIlverman, Bob Odenkrik (from Mr. Show) and about a thousanc other comedians. The space is fairly small, which makes for intimate jokes and plenty of interaction with the audience, but it also means that at the more popular shows, you may end up sitting on the stage (off to the side) which isn’t really comfortable for anyone. Show up early to avoid this. BTW, it’s BYOB!
