This is the mama hen of all hipster coffee shops in San Francisco. There’s always a line out the door of people trying to get their daily french pressed coffee sweetened with agave nectar, and they probably won’t serve you unless you have a tattoo or an ironic mustache. A ton of fixed gear bicycles are always chained up to the parking meters outside. Ritual is so famous, the New York Times even wrote an article about it!
This is THE cafe to go pick up either a freelance journalist or a tech millionaire. The New York Times recently published an article about Ritual Roasters and how it was the stomping ground for the young tech richies of San Francisco. But beyond that, it is also THE cafe with the cutest barristas. Hellloooooo ironic mustache boy. Hellooooooo cute tattoo girl. Ritual is always busy no matter what time of day it is, and makes the best soy cappucino I have ever tasted in my life.
Used to be the number one hipster coffee land in SF until Four Barrel opened. Still relevant. Written about constantly in magazines and newspapers, and even the NY Times did a feature. Wonderful coffee – the best in San Francisco in terms of quality. Hectic inside. Lots of bobos.

Looking for a cup of coffee to better reflect your subcultural leanings? Try Ritual. It screams Mission hipster chic. Don’t let the cool kids loitering out front with their fixed gear bikes and tattoos scare you too much, you’re all connected through the humanness of your addiction. The filtered coffee at Ritual doesn’t fill the void for me in the same way that Philz does, but their espresso drinks are where the money’s at. It’s rare to find a proper macchiato in the US, but Ritual does it well. Although their Valencia street location is rather large for a cafe, seating is always limited as Ritual seems to act as a hub for moody intellectuals, bibliophiles and students.
