Amoeba is a musical black hole (once you dive into their ginormous music selection odds are you’ll never make it out again), but it’s also an excellent place for musicphiles to get together. iTunes? Are you kidding? I get all my music at this independent superstore in the heart of Hollywood.
On the weekends it is jam packed with jam seekers. The staff is knowledgeable without making you feel like a loser (usually) and sometimes they’ll have killer live (and free!) shows in the back featuring anyone from Aqualung to Paul McCartney. Rad.

An independently owned megastore, Amoeba Music caused a huge stir when it first arrived in LA. Lots of my friends used to making a yearly pilgrimage to Berkeley’s location now visit the Los Angeles store three or four times a week. Boasting a huge selection, most everything is reasonably priced as much of the discs and records are used. The many live music shows that they offer are also a key draw.
