Where To Get Your Burger Fix in Los Angeles

Many tout the Father’s Office burger as being the best in LA. But if you’re expecting a traditional ketchup-soaked patty on a sesame bun with pickles, you might be disappointed. The FO version is more like a steak sandwich than a burger. The aged beef comes dressed with bacon, arugula, gruyere, and blue cheese atop a crusty roll, which is then cut in half. Traditional? No. Worth waiting half an hour in line for? Yes.

If you ever go to Father’s Office with me on a Friday or Saturday night you should bring snacks (baggie of Cheerios, Fruit Roll Up, etc…) because the line will be long and I will get hangry. But are the scrumptious blue cheese-spiked burgers and shopping carts full of sweet potato fries, worth my rage? You bet they are.

The infamous burger aside, Father’s Office has an excellent selection of beer on tap. While ordering food here is a no brainer (burger and sweet potato fries!!!) ordering a beer is sort of an agonizing decision. They have a pretty big selection and everything sounds pretty good— not to mention they usually have specials. The last time I was here I think I managed to annoy the bartender with my indecision regarding my choice of beer (I ended up going with one of the white ales, which was totally delicious). But hey, if I’m paying that much money for beers and burgers I’m going to retain the right to be indecisive.

Los Angeles Gastropubs: I'm Rich, Biyaitch!

Undoubtedly the most famous of Los Angeles’ gastropubs, Father’s Office puts out what is widely considered the best hamburger in LA. Their wide selection of rare beers only heightens the dining experience. I do hear some uncharitable comments from time to time about the chef/owner denying menu substitutions and his absolute refusal to serve his frites with ketchup. And because of his Korean ancestry, many of these hateful comments are punctuated with racial over and undertones. I love my country and I am not a particularly racist person, but as an avowed ketchup lover, I have to say that once in a while I will include myself into their racially charged diatribes… which always confuses the hell out of them.

Where NOT To Go On A Date In Los Angeles

Yes, the burgers here are good. BUT it takes forever to get inside, and once you’re inside you might not be able to get a table—it’s not uncommon to see people eating while standing up at the bar. Plus, you will smell like oniony burger afterwards, which isn’t super appealing.
