2008 DNC National Convention - A Local Guide
This is a visitor guide to the neighborhood in and around the DNC Convention in August 2008 in Denver, CO. It's a great neighborhood, enjoy yourself! Authored by someone who works one block from the convention headquarters, so you know you're getting a truly local guide.
2008 Inman Real Estate Connect Conference, San Francisco
If you're attending the 2008 Inman Real Estate Connect Conference in San Francisco on July 22nd-25th, here is a handy guide to help explore and navigate this great city. A few locals have created an eclectic and interesting set of guides. I've linked to just a few of them - enjoy exploring. I'll be speaking at the Inman Conference on the Friday morning session "Get Social or Die" - I hope to see you there!
Best San Francisco Boutique Hotels
Skip the chains - there are some great reviews of boutique hotels in the city, ranging from budget conscious to hip and upscale. I've been staying in a bunch of these off an on over the past 10 years. Here are my "expert picks".
Coachella 2008 - one man's guide
This will be my fifth year making the musical pilgrimage to Indio, California for the Coachella Music and Arts Festival. If you like indie and/or electronic music, it's mecca. Right up there with Bonnaroo and SXSW, it's a 3-day festival with about 100-120 bands.
Colorado BMW Enthusiasts Guide
Own a BMW and live in Colorado? Here are some handy spots. With three at home, I constantly hunt for the right places to service, upgrade and treat them right...
Denver LODO Restaurants: Reviews by a Local
I've worked or lived in LODO for most of the last decade. Compiled here is a list of what I consider the "best of LODO". A bit of a moving target, yes, but the restaurants described below seem to stay on top of their game. Categorized for handy reference with the maps, I hope you find this guide useful. Feel free to agree/disagree or complain - that's what the comments are for! Enjoy the neighborhood.
Denver's Colfax Avenue: Signs of the Kerouac Era
A photo tour of some of the classic old motel and business signs of Colfax Avenue in Denver. Described by the NY Times as "Rocky Mountains answer to Haight-Ashbury in San Francisco and Greenwich Village in New York". Made (in)famous by Kerouac in his Denver daze. Western ho!
Men With Brooms: The Manly Sport of Curling
For the uninitiated, Curling probably comes off like an exotic game, akin to wild boar hunting or street luge. This guide aims to demystify the ancient northern sport of Curling, one of the great games of Olympians. Long thought of as a Canadian sport, its roots are actually in Scotland in the early 1500's. Today, Canada is the world's most advanced Curling country (stats below), and hosts the annual Briar, considered to be the premier annual Curling Bonspiel. There is a World Curling Champ...
Red Rocks 2008: The MILF Year: "Music I'd Love to Forget"
You take the world's best outdoor venue for live music, one that musicians count on their "must do" list, and you put 50 somethings in charge (that's all I can think of to blame!) Whaddya get? Well look out below, but it ain't pretty. Here's a glimpse of the 2008 Red Rocks line-up.
Spotting Poutine
I had the pleasure / tragic upbringing that exposed me to Poutine in those impressionable years. I crave the stuff, can't wait to get to Montreal for a fix - Montreal is mecca for Poutine addicts. Sadly, I have been pumped up falsely with hope on hearing that Denver might actually have a rare Poutine spotting. This guide explains this culinary art crime / food bomb, and dares you to grab it next time you get to quebec...and kills the myth that you can find it in Denver.
Sushi DenVER
Despite the mid-west location of Denver, there are a select few places where sushi lovers can feed their cravings with fresh quality and sometimes even with style. All of these Denver sushi restaurants are places I've been to regularly, so consider this my "best of" list. You'll find some of these on Zagat or Citysearch lists, but a few are more obscure, and a couple too new for the national guide writers to have found.
The Best Midtown New York Boutique Hotels for Business Travelers
If you cringe at the Marriott logo, and need a quality boutique hotel in New York's Midtown neighborhood, check these out. I've stayed at them all and always compare these hotels first. All of these boutique hotels are business traveler friendly, with amenities and style you'll appreciate. I've also included a list of places I've tried, which are not the best for business travelers.
The Best Outdoor Al Fresco Dining in Denver
A few upscale places in the Denver area where you enjoy the Colorado air, and feel just a little more European. A growing number of restaurants offer outdoor dining, cafe style. Support them, the experience is second to none on a warm summer evening.
The SMX Local and Mobile Conference in San Francisco: What's Around the Conference?
If you're attending the upcoming SMX Local and Mobile Conference in San Francisco on July 24-25th, here is a handy "guide of guides" to help explore a great city, and plan your stay. I'll see you there! A few locals have created an eclectic and interesting set of guides. I've linked to just a few of them - enjoy exploring.

Hello, Perry-
Your “Local Matters Office Visitors Guide” was very helpful – if anyone else is wondering what surrounds the Denver office, I’d highly recommend it…
-
Thanks for the compliment Perry. I look forward to seeing you at the conference next week.

Hi Perry,
It is work, but I love my job! I am going to use the Royal Hawaiian guide as an example for the real estate industry and teach them through e-PRO and other venues, how to use Guidespot. I think RealTown/IC and Local Matters can also create some synergies. -
Your Poutine guide was great… But what really made your guide was the Poutine rap video… Where the only word I could understand was “squishy!”
