The next time a great big hurricane chases you out of your city, you may want to consider evacuating to Lincoln, Nebraska. Two years ago I did just that, and, considering the circumstances, I found the experience to be quite pleasant. The people in Lincoln are friendly and generous, the cost of living is quite low, it's generally not over-run by other evacuees, and, though it's not a flashy town, it has it's fare share of interesting places to explore. Do you want to soak in a bit of the real New Orleans but only have a day or two? My advice is to skip Bourbon Street all together and plan your stay around Frenchman Street instead. In fact, I offer this advice no matter how much time you have to linger. Avoid the tacky tourist shops, neon drinks and kareoke bars of our city's most overrated street and lose yourself on Frenchmen instead. Unlike Bourbon Street, Frenchman is about quality live music.
