A one-room schoolhouse built in 1880, the restored Whippoorwhill Academy contains the Tom Dooley Museum, which includes drawings, paintings and other Dooley memorabilia. It is located 10 miles southwest of Wilkesboro in Ferguson. The surrounding village includes a blacksmith shop, a country store, a chapel, a weaver’s shop and the Smokehouse Art Museum, which displays work by local artists.
