Perfect for all types of water sports, Lake McConaughy is a massive dam, stretching up to 20 miles long and 4 miles wide when full, with well-maintained white sand beaches. Fishing at the lake is some of the best in the state, making it a primary draw to the area; the most common catches are rainbow trout, catfish, walleye, and a number of species of bass. The lake is located 8 miles north of Ogallala, and visitors can either return to town for the night or set up camp by the lake.
